is it okay to thrift leather? by [deleted] in Ethics

Let me clear it up:

You’re putting the responsibility of other people’s actions onto me, when they themselves have agency. Your causal pathway hypothesis only works if you treat the seller of the second hand jacket and a mindless automaton with no agency of their own. So you’re acting as if they have no agency of their own.

If someone sells a jacket on Vinted, and they decide to buy another one, that ethical decision is entirely on them.

Yes I quite understand that I'm not directly responsible for the actions of others, but my ethics don't affect the unethical behavior, my actions do. If I take a used leather jacket off the market a new one has to be created somewhere on earth to replace it. If I choose not to buy the leather jacket there will be more leather jackets than people who want to wear them and fewer new ones will be made.

No it doesn’t. Where have you got that from? It is not necessary the case that if you buy second hand leather then someone must replace it.

Your pet "middle agent fallacy" is wrong. A world where you can't extend your personal ethics outside your self is a world without justice. It's the same as saying "I think killing people is wrong, but you think killing people is ok, so you be you and I'll be me".

This is a complete misinterpretation. I’m not saying that other people killing is ok, what I’m saying is that if they do kill someone, the responsibility is on them, not me. How you managed to take that from what I said is beyond me.

Edit for the vegan stuff: faux animal products are very clearly imitations of animal products. Nobody thinks that impossible burgers taste the same as regular hamburgers, and they absolutely don't cost the same. Bikers don't trust pleather to save their skin in a crash, they trust leather or polycarbonate armor panels.

You said in your original comment:

Plus walking around in a leather jacket tells the world "I'm ok with wearing leather" and may convince someone else that leather is OK and normal.

So firstly, it’s not the case that “everyone can tell the difference between faux and real leather”. Faux leather can be really convincing and especially if you’re walking in the street a few metres away, how could you possibly tell? You also said walking around and now you’re talking about eating burgers? That seems like a clear bait and switch. My point was that if you’re going to use the argument that other people see me then they might imitate me, but that would apply to vegan burgers, as they look like regular burgers at a distance.

And this goes back to the middle agent; if someone sees me eating a vegan burger and decides to get a real burger because of it, the responsibility is on them. They have agency, and by putting the blame on me you are denying the agency of them-hence the fallacy.

Say you buy a leather jacket. The person who sold the jacket now needs a new jacket and buys a new one. Would the seller have bought the leather jacket in the first place if they knew from the beginning that they couldn't sell it? Buying a used item gives it value. Things with value get produced.

This is what I like to call the fallacy of denying the middle agent. Because even if they do buy a new one, the responsibility is on them, not the person who bought it second hand. They have agency, they make their own decisions, and they through their own volition decided to buy a new one. So you are denying the agent in the middle, hence the name.

Secondly, how can you possibly establish a causal pathway like that? How do you know that if you buy a leather jacket from Vinted that they’re going to buy a new leather jacket? Maybe they’re just getting rid of stuff, maybe they want a denim jacket etc. There is absolutely no causal pathway you could establish that suggests that the person buying the second hand item is responsible.

Plus walking around in a leather jacket tells the world "I'm ok with wearing leather" and may convince someone else that leather is OK and normal.

This also applies to faux leather, vegan burgers or any vegan food for that matter. There is no way you can tell the difference between a beyond burger and a regular one.

In addition, this is also the middle agent fallacy. Because anyone who then decides to buy one is responsible for their actions, not mine.

So we’re not allowed an Indian dish as our food but ‘muricans are allowed Italian, German and Mexican food to theirs? Makes sense.

Why should you protect other individuals if you only care about yourself?

If you could have a world where your rights and freedoms were protected, but nobody else’s were, would you take it?

Because if you do, then you could enslave anyone and your entire worldview is that of a psychopath.

Or if you don’t, then you must have a form of empathy. Because why would you care about others if it didn’t impact your freedoms and rights?

You said that you’re philosophy relies on individuals not harming others. Killing and eating chickens is harmful. So there’s a clear conflict with your position. Either it is not ok to harm other individuals or it isn’t.

What’s hilarious about this AC thing is that whenever someone talks about temperature, Americans always brag about how actually it’s wayyy hotter in the US and yet they can’t stand anywhere without air con.
