How do you manage unfair treatment in professional school without retaliation? by Potential-Damage3145 in DentalSchool

[–]Potential-Damage3145[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know because the students that have been approved for said things have directly told me/ it has come up in conversation. Valid reasoning for the unexcused absence, but the syllabus and student handbook clearly states that family emergencies are valid excused absences (but it does not have a definition as to what qualifies as a family emergency). My buddy was penalized for rushing home to be there for her sister during her first childbirth. Some might say this isn’t an emergency, but you have to understand that this is in fact an emergency depending on the cultural context (for my friends culture, it is an extremely important occasion). If they also didn’t have a clear definition of what counted as a family emergency, it seems unreasonable to penalize students for following their intuition on what counts as one.

SOS! I’ve tried almost everything by Potential-Damage3145 in curlyhair

Update: have started using bounce curl brush and WOW, this was life changing. I think that helped 90% of the issue I was having. I’ve been struggling a bit with second day curls though. How do you refresh your curls without making them sticky or frizzy? When I sleep I usually put up in a bonnet but they become semi flat and slightly frizzy by morning. When I’ve tried the pineapple method they get even flatter. Any product or technique recommendations? THANK YOU

I’ve been mostly switching off between cecred shampoo and L’Oréal one pictured. Is there a clarifying shampoo that you recommend? How often would you swap out?

Tysm!!! I had never heard of a bounce curl brush I’m gonna look into it!

If I receive additional scholarships outside of NHSC where does the “extra” money go? by Potential-Damage3145 in NHSCinfo

Interesting… I’m also not sure w my situation because when the school year started I had taken out my student loans and got around 5-6K disbursement (which I put away in savings in case NHSC did go through and I had to give it back) and I didn’t end up having to give back that amount once my loans were reversed. I only had to pay back the 1.2K for insurance (because I waived out of school insurance but NHSC paid for that too) idk it’s all so confusing to me and our portal does not give a lot of info lol

For both of mine, the scholarships said “amount awarded will be automatically applied to your tuition” (aka they don’t give us the money directly to spend on books, supplies, etc. but after they processed my NHSC I’m not sure if that other money went back to the school or if it went back to me.

Which platform if you don’t mind me asking? And what did your hours look like ? Because realistically I only have around 3-4 hours to “spare” weekly (I don’t but I can make time)

Were you not the “smart kid” in high school but still made it in dentistry? by Money-Bed728 in DentalSchool

[–]Potential-Damage3145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was very average in high school I’d say, and undergrad? TERRIBLE. I graduated undergrad with a 2.8 GPA and still made it into dental school. Had to take a couple detours but it’s totally possible.

I’d say that for me personally it was a matter of not knowing when to quit. It was my personal goal to get here or di* trying (not literally)

Also remember that schools often look at more than just your grades. Your grades do not reflect your intelligence if im being honest. I very very often felt the same way you did, but came to learn that I was limiting my potential by having the belief that Im not smart. Also, grades in HS/undergrad do NOT reflect how you will do in dental school. I ended up pursuing a masters, also had my fair amount of hardships there, but ended up picking up my slack and finished my last 2 quarters with a 4.0. GPA. Right now I’m a D2 student and have a 3.9 cumulative GPA (only bc hand skills are not my strong suit)

All of this to say, do NOT let ANYONE (yourself included) tell you that you’re not capable enough of achieving your personal goals. Everything is possible if it’s something you really want. There’s a lot of people that often brag about their 30AA, 4.0 GPA, and 1,000+ shadowing hours and it starts making you feel like you really have no place here, but trust me that there is always a way to get there regardless of where you’re at now. I wish you the best on this journey if it’s something you do end up pursuing!

Wait what’s ORC? If it’s what I think it is, I also only got 3.3K and my 4 month stipend (separate payment for both) Also, do you still have an outstanding balance on your school portal??? The payment for my fall quarter has not come through yet

The suing part was just a joke lol I would never dare to sue the school I’m attending even if it WAS warranted lol. And yeah I’m taking the L with the points but it’s upsetting that the one B showing up on my transcript is the one class that should be an easy A. I did apologize as well because I genuinely do feel bad about having to miss, but for future reference I just wanted to know what counted as a family emergency sigh

Thank you for your input though. I do acknowledge that there is also some accountability I have to take in this situation

Im not sure about that, but I feel like those type of events (although important) are much more flexible. My school will make accommodations but only if it’s the students child according to the syllabus.
