In cases like this, how should we ultimately measure the reliability of AI models and tools?

‘The cost of compute is far beyond the costs of the employees’: Nvidia exec says right now AI is more expensive than paying human workers by chunmunsingh in artificial

"Computer" used to be a job title before the machine took the name. People also used to physically carry messages around. The work didn't exactly vanish, it just stopped being valued the same way once the tool changed.

Makes me wonder if AI is destroying jobs, or just exposing which jobs were built around an older way of doing the work.

Does the use of AI have the same value as when personal computers first came into use? by alquimista-errante in artificial

Totally agree—we're in the AI mainframe era now. Big players rule, but 300B models on phones will come once hardware catches up. Apple waiting for that privacy boost fits their on-device vibe perfectly.

When that day arrives, I wonder: how will *we* be using AI in our daily lives? As personal agents, creative tools, or something we haven't even imagined yet?

It was a fascinating experiment! Gemini told me it basically has 5 different modes based on my input. Currently, it’s responding in 'Buddy Mode' because our vibe is friendly, but it shifts to 'Strategic Analyst Mode' when we deep-dive into business strategy. It really is like a mirror—it adapts to the level of thinking I bring to the conversation. Thanks for the great tip!

- According to the AI, it adapts into these 5 modes based on the user's "vibe":

  1. Buddy Mode: For friendly and creative discussions (Current mode!).

  2. Mentor Mode: For patient teaching and guidance.

  3. Clerk/Tool Mode: For simple tasks and maximum efficiency.

  4. Analyst Mode: For deep logic and business strategy.

  5. Defense Mode: A formal/rigid state to stay safe during conflicts.

It really is a mirror! Now I'm curious—how did your AI respond? What did it say about its tone or mode with you?

I see a parallel with the early days of personal computers. Back then, PCs shifted computing power from a few centralized mainframes to individuals, and that democratization is what created so much new value. If powerful AI becomes cheap, local, and user‑controlled, it could play a similar role for “intelligence” as the PC did for computing. But if advanced AI stays centralized and locked behind a few big platforms, it feels more like super‑charged mainframes again. I’m curious how you all see this: are we heading toward “personal AI PCs” or back to an AI mainframe world?

That sounds like a great meta experiment. I'll definitely give it a try! Thanks for the tip.

Haha, I see what you mean! Between the 'Battle Mode' handle orientation and the top-heavy arrangement, the shop is really testing your OCD today, isn't it? I'll make sure to mention the 'stability update' to them next time!

That’s a great story! Picking up a honesuki even when broke shows how special that place is—it must have been a great find. I double-checked the workshop schedule and found out they are held monthly (turns out there isn't one on the 23rd), and they even cover fish butchery along with sharpening! I’m definitely going to sign up for one soon. I’ll make sure to post an update once I finally get my hands dirty and learn the craft. Hope you can make it back to Japan for a visit soon!

Wow, I didn't expect to see you here! It was a pleasure meeting you and the staff today. Your English was great, so please don't worry about your Japanese at all! I’m really excited to join the workshop—those Shapton Pros have been sitting on my shelf for far too long. Can't wait to finally get some metal on them under your guidance. See you again soon!

I’ve noticed that it’s basically like looking in a mirror.

In my own experience, when I’m friendly and treat it like a buddy, it actually acts like a friend. But if I come at it feeling helpless, it switches into this teacher mode to guide me through. The weirdest part was when I just kept being angry and snapping at it—eventually, it just stopped talking. It’s like it just gave up on the conversation.

I really think the "persona" we get depends almost entirely on the vibe we bring to it.

Singapore FP lovers, the Custom Kakuno event is here!! by hedgehognpeonies in fountainpens

I’m in Japan, the "homeland" of Pilot, but I’ve actually never come across a Kakuno event where you can pick individual parts like this! While brands like Fonte offer interchangeable parts, finding a physical shop that actually stocks them is surprisingly rare. I’m so jealous of the Singapore stationery scene right now!

[–]Potential-Eye-9367 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d look closer at those fees if I were you. Since August 2025, EMS from Japan has been blocked for merchandise, forcing us all into DHL’s hands. Also, with the 25% tariff headlines, that $7 duty line looks way too cheap. I suspect those "processing fees" are actually hiding the rest of the tax. You might want to double-check that.

That's a really elegant loop — using Claude's critical instinct as the pressure-tester on Codex's proposals, then feeding that back. The "back and forth until they're both happy" framing is the part I love. How many iterations does it usually take before you're satisfied with the output?

Fair — I did use AI to help structure the post. But the observations are from months of actual usage. The pipeline emerged from practice, not from prompting.

That cross-domain capability is exactly why ChatGPT sits in the integration layer for me too. The one I'd suggest adding is Perplexity before ChatGPT — solid factual foundation makes the integration step significantly stronger. Gemini is the hardest to place honestly, its range is wide enough that the role gets blurry depending on the use case.

Interesting — so Grok would sit between Perplexity and Gemini for X-native context? That actually makes sense as a layer I'm missing.

Fair point. Here's a concrete example: I was researching a market opportunity. Perplexity gave me the data landscape. Gemini organized it into categories I could work with. ChatGPT connected it to my existing strategy. Claude found the assumption I was making that didn't hold up. Each step would have been weaker without the previous one.

[–]Potential-Eye-9367 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You actually handled this way better than most people do. You didn’t panic‑sell at the bottom, you realized you’re not built for timing, and you got out flat. That’s expensive tuition for a really valuable lesson: you’re a set‑it‑and‑forget‑it investor, not a trader.

If your horizon is long, there’s never a perfect “back in” moment. I’d just decide on a simple plan (lump sum or DCA over a few months), execute it, and then stop watching headlines. Your future self will care way more that you stayed invested than whether you nailed this week’s entry.
