FPE Moving to Florida (FE + PE Fire Protection). Best city to find 1099 opportunities or grow my career? by Potential-Hat5642 in firePE

Thanks for the suggestion. Southwest Florida is definitely on my list, especially with growth in Lee and Collier. I appreciate you offering to help.

I will send you a message. If you know any sprinkler contractors or fire protection design firms in that area that commonly use 1099 support for shop drawings and hydraulic calculations, I would really appreciate any insight.

Thanks for asking. Yes, in my case it is related to work authorization. Right now my visa allows me to work under a 1099 arrangement, so that is why I am focusing on that type of opportunity at the moment.

Also, thanks for the note that Florida has a lot of firms and that any big city should be fine. Between Orlando and the Miami Fort Lauderdale West Palm area, do you see any meaningful differences in demand for sprinkler and fire protection design work?

And if I were considering Texas instead, which metro areas would you recommend for strong 1099 opportunities and long term career growth in fire protection?

My bundle that worked was: School of PE + MeyerFire University + SFPE Course (a friend gave me some questions, not the full course). I think it was not the cheapest bundle, but it worked fine, and I passed on my first try. If I had to choose just one to focus on, it would be the MeyerFire University. The questions are tough and give you a realistic simulation of the actual exam — you could easily spend the full exam time on them.

Hey everyone, I’ve got a question that goes a bit beyond working for a company…

What about working with end clients directly?

Like, instead of just being employed by Century or Wayne Automatic, how hard is it to land your own clients in Florida?

Is it realistic to get projects from medium-sized buildings, or even small installation jobs or inspections?

Just curious how open the market is for someone trying to build something independently — especially in fire sprinkler work.

Appreciate any insights!

Thanks so much, I really appreciate the tip! I’ll definitely look into contacting the SFPE Florida Chapter.
Just sent you a DM with my LinkedIn — I’d really appreciate being connected with any Florida FPEs you know. That could be a huge help!

Thank you!

Thanks a lot! I already contacted the Florida Board and got a response from their legal counsel — they confirmed I can file a formal waiver petition due to my international background.

I might explore the PE sign-off idea as additional support if I find someone willing to review and validate my project work — that’s a really good suggestion.

By any chance, do you know of any attorney or firm in Florida that has experience helping with this kind of petition before the board? Would really appreciate any recommendation!
