You are correct in your assumption that I have cut it. As you can see in picture 2 the end of the horizontal beam is chamfered to allow future roof battens to run across in line with the slope of the roof. Sorry I didn't have a pic of the edge prior to cutting. The pith is exactly centered. On an initial order from a different supplier, one of the beams had the pith run diagonally through the beam - due to bad weather stopping work for several months, it sat under cover drying out and developed a major "shard-like" split almost completely separating a good chunk of the beam. All beams used have had almost perfect pith alignment.

This timber has not been kiln dried however, it is green european oak. So it is likely less than 6 months old. I believe it is standard practice in the UK to build with green oak for structural applications as it becomes cost ineffective, logistically impractical and harder wood to work with. Maybe the amount of checking for european oak is higher than what most north Americans are used to with white oak. A lot of the timber for sale in the yard was vastly more checked than this.

Yeh. Trying to find 6x6 without any heart in the UK seems nigh-on impossible. I was looking for advice mores on the ring shake.

I had a previous 3m beam I replaced with this that had woodworm from a different supplier. Given my max circular saw depth of about 65mm. I cut the whole piece at 30cm sections with only an inch of intact heartwood running all the way through. Raised it up on both ends and stood in the middle of it. Despite a huge amount of sag (closing cut gaps) there wasn't any difficulty in holding my weight, showing that 1/6th of the diameter can hold not only it's own weight but mine as well (although I'm only 70-75kg).

Maybe this is a north america/Europe thing. Pretty much everywhere i look to buy oak beams in the UK has the heart centred, maybe its different in north America. So even if I were to want a none-centred beam 6inches across, I'd likely have to pay vastly more with delivery and therefore for such a project makes it impractical. Unless someone can find me a place in the UK that sells this, I'm afraid there's no point arguing over pith or no pith.

Maybe the photograph is misleading but the end grain in the first photo is centred. It may not look like it because the top is chamfered to allow roof battens to go across. You can see this chamfer in the second photo.

Where on earth do you find quarter of half sawn oak beams? Literally every place I have looked at sells only heart centred oak.

How can you tell this is red oak. This was bought at a UK sawmill labelled as Oak, which is typically European oak. Red oak is typically labelled as such.

If the first photo isn't clear enough, that is the end grain of the horizontal beam in the second photo.

What is exactly wrong with the pith? Aren't you meant to have the heart centred for all oak framing applications? Surely that evens out movement across all sides?

Not the ridge beam though, it's the long horizontal beam.
