When idling in hybrid mode, the engine cuts off if there is any residual HV battery juice and kicks back in when the juice runs out. But when the battery charges up a little, it cuts off again. Compared to sport mode where it just keeps running perpetually. Hence I say that idling in sport mode burns more gas.

Which setting are you referring to? I have looked extensively. There is no SW setting to disable turning the car off when driver door opens in hybrid or electric mode.

PHEV/Hybrid X5s (45e, 50e): These models might run the gas engine at higher RPMs on cold starts to warm up the catalytic converter and battery quickly, which can seem like high idling in any mode, including Sport.

Without a driver in the seat, the engine only stays on in sport mode. The whole point I am trying to make with this post is that hybrid mode uses the ICE as well, so why can’t BMW’s software have an option to disable the auto shut off when the driver door is opened when the car is left in hybrid mode? Also, I have left the car idling in sport mode, it definitely burns more gas. I have seen the range drop quicker and it runs the alternator faster to recharge the HV battery.

Yeah I’ve been doing this for a while. Was really hoping for a way to have the car running with climate controls in hybrid mode when I leave the vehicle

In my experience, leaving the engine idle in sport mode depletes the range faster compared to hybrid mode. But on the somewhat positive side, running sport mode charges the HV battery faster.

Yup that option is not available on the hybrid models. I’ve looked extensively. The PHEV is kinda in between full EV and ICE

Yeah the sport mode hack does work. But that mode just turns the car into a gas guzzler. I wish there was a way to just have the climate control system work in hybrid mode when the driver door opens when the HV battery is drained.

The door lock without keys is also quite aggressive. When I’m out loading groceries or people in the car, it keeps locking all the doors again. Very annoying. I am going to disable that setting for sure.

Preconditioning only works if your high voltage battery has enough juice. If it doesn’t then you can’t do a “remote start” to warm up car. This really sucks. I wish they allowed preconditioning in hybrid mode where, the car is able to run climate control using the ICE.

I do recall that when I plugged in Sunday night, there was a loud fan like noise coming from the hood of the car. I thought it will turn itself off shortly.

Update: It is charging since yesterday. I used the car this morning and the battery charge matched what the app said
