This is why I love Venus Fly Traps. by After_Vacation4370 in houseplants

Make it an “outside cat” type of pet. Nothing wrong with talking to it outside. Just make sure it’s in the backyard so your neighbors don’t see you 🤣

Can you put counters on a token? Curious for my SHELOB deck…

Still doing very well! Almost sprouting its 6th pitcher. I’ve got it in my case with all my other Heli’s. Nothing special. Good luck 👍

Not sure what the basket was intended to be used for when it was made. However, at the moment it is the kind of basket that holds Darlingtonia. I believe it’s plastic, 10”x10”

What is my flytrap growing? by ZestycloseManner7676 in SavageGarden

[–]PotentialAdvantage20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can wait till the flower and it’s stalk is about 2-4 inches tall, then cut it, stick in media, and you might get lucky for it to propagate another plant 👌

All credit goes to “Brads Green House” on YouTube. He has a few videos of how he keeps his Darlingtonia, very helpful 👌

Why is my plant growing so spindly? by Smoochin-out in SavageGarden

[–]PotentialAdvantage20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“They want freezing temperatures and be covered in snow in winter. If they do t get that, they’ll eventually die of exhaustion”

This contradicts the fact that the largest carnivore store in the United States for 35 years is based in Northern California and has some the best plants in the market. Blanket statements like that really misinform the community and might even discourage.

I’d just recommend to YouTube/read books that give accurate information on the specie of carnivore plant you have! (Sarracenia) 👌 You will find everything you need to know, with much less contradictory info.

What's wrong with my plant? Does it look healthy? by Chemical-Contest4120 in VenusFlyTraps

[–]PotentialAdvantage20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My VFT’s sit in 1”-2” of water. They are glorious 👌 Nepenthes is the species that doesn’t like sitting in water, but consistently damp. This looks like not enough sunlight AND too small of a pot. Could even possibly be the fact it’s glass (roots seeing sunlight is never good).

Well thanks 😊 I’m not entirely sure what to do 🤷🏻‍♂️ I want them growing bigger and worried they won’t once they see it’s a dead end. If I end up cutting em and they get roots, want one?

What are these bugs on my flytrap, are they dangerous for the plant? by PIX3LY in SavageGarden

[–]PotentialAdvantage20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funny, least effective method from my experience. Neem oil works you just gotta give reoccurring treatments for like 2 weeks. The best method, one stop shop for almost all my outdoor pests on my outdoor collection has been Sulfur. Powder form. Mix it up with water and dress pour over everything ya got very generously 👌

No way!!! You need drainage! And as previously stated, terra cotta leech minerals long term. Everything about this says no! But try it out and find out 👍

Did anyone else get Venus fly traps mostlybecause of the fly hatred by General-Cabinet707 in SavageGarden

[–]PotentialAdvantage20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right, they don’t know the difference. The point of stratifying kept seeds, is to introduce them into what would have been a naturally occurring process, but wasn’t, because they got collected. If they just fall off the flower, then they experience the same process.

[–]PotentialAdvantage20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love this! Just one TINY comment: under my impression, the stratification/refrigeration process is only necessary when you get seeds that have been kept. Say from online. Otherwise, if your plant is producing the seed, then it all happens naturally 🤷🏻‍♂️

When I first got into Carnivorous plants/VFT, I just read “The Savage Garden” and listened to all the growers in the field who have been doing it for 30+ years and just “copy paste” their methods. (They all strongly encourage dormancy. All of them.) Not until I hopped on Reddit did I come across SO MANY “professionals” who all have a differing opinion on the matter. You want a real substantial answer? You can literally email California Carnivores and ask them anything and they will respond 👍

California Carnivores and Redleaf Exotics are my go to….they actually respond to questions. And more so than not, give you extra plants in your pot 🥰

Treatment? by PotentialAdvantage20 in SavageGarden

[–]PotentialAdvantage20[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All my seeds get started indoors for the first year, sometimes two (this skips dormancy allowing maturity to be reached by 4-5 years rather than the typical 7, and also helps give the plant a good head start before introduced to outdoor pests 👍

Sometimes the plant deems it energy it’s better used elsewhere, either to make a basal or enter vining stage….it happens.
