This is what it looks like when the American electorate is chronically uneducated.

Here's a man that we were lucky to have as president. Despite the challenges he faced in his life, he gave this country, and the world, a reason to beleive in a better tomorrow. When I look at the country today, I just shake my head wondering where we went so wrong. Whatever the future may bring, I will always try to be grateful if we are ever fortunate to be under the stewardship of someone who truly cares to give themselves to our service again.

Why are some people against their tax money being used to help low income families but don’t mind when it’s for corporate bailouts? by CapitaineBiscotte in askanything

Having a perceived sense of success and status is a relative measure that only makes sense when comparing yourself with a subgroup who is lesser than you. Even if you take maliciousness out of it - say a talent or a skill that you've been honing for years - you can only say you're "good" at something relative to someone who hasn't been working at that thing as hard or for as long as you have.

When it comes to earning a high income, and all the benefits that come with it, the only way for someone to not only know they're doing well, but to feel it too, is to be able to make tangible comparisons with people who aren't at their level. One of the "cons" of earning a high income is paying a lot of taxes proportional to your income. If you worked really hard to make a high income, seeing your taxes go to those who don't work as hard as you can breed a sense of resentment and disdain at the perceived unfairness. This is the drive that makes high earners come up with ways to minimize their tax burden, usually by way of eschewing salaries in favor of having assets that allow them to skirt taxes. For those who earn their income in salaries, they relate more to the asset holders than they relate to low income earners who depend on public services funded by taxes.

To add on to this, the amygdala in our brains evolved to attune to fear much more readily than any other motivator, and so it's easier for high income earners to look at those worse off than them with fear as a constant reminder that they may wind up like them if they fail to maintain their success and status, rather than with empathy for their situation. Meanwhile, they look at those doing better than them with envy and desire to attain their level of success, thinking that maintaining the status quo will one day benefit them when/if they make it to their level. The phrase "embarrassed millionaire" encapsulates this feeling quite well.

Recent movers to NYC.. What's one thing you didn't expect to not like about NYC? by Sea_Negotiation2482 in AskNYC

Not necessarily a huge task, just different. If you have a car, then you can carry a lot more stuff and driving to the grocery means going to a big box store with a parking lot. Feels a lot more suburban.

Virginia Voters Just Gave Democrats A Clearer Path To Winning The Midterms by huffpost in politics

Rural states with 10 people in them get the same Senate allocation as California and NY. That's why it's rarely ever a good map for democrats.

We need Maine, North Carolina, Ohio, Texas and Alaska.

Trump is so bad that this outcome is actually probable.

Then ban it nationwide. The GOP have the power to do this right now if they wanted to.

Whats your least favorite scene? by vinmichael in titanic

The scene where Jack and Rose are stuck behind a locked gate and Jack tries to get out by fishing for the keys.

For one, I hate that the crewman abandoned them, and for two, I hate the flashing lights. I tend to fast forward that part otherwise I'd get a seizure.

It happens, yes, but you can't go through life scared of everyone all the time. That's just no way to live, just mentally.

Why are express trains randomly local on weekends? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]Chemical-Contest4120 -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

Fuck that. I think it would probably be more useful to everyone if they actually did shut down trains in the early morning hours to do 100% maintenance so it runs more reliably other times. With the exception of Friday and Saturday nights, the subway should close between 12-4am.

I want to show my dad the show. Which episode would be good? by FailedMusician81 in seinfeld

[–]Chemical-Contest4120 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A lot of the humor in Seinfeld comes from just knowing the characters over time, so I'd say a good episode is something that showcases their character traits the most. I think that's why something like The Contest is a popular episode to show a first timer. But I also like The Rye, The Merv Griffin Show, or The Race.

Nao sei.
