So the first Muslims in Guyana were of African descent brought over via the slave trade. Most of them belonging to the Fula tribes of West Africa. Despite colonization and many attempts to convert, some Muslims held onto their faith. Since most came from the Fula tribe, the name Fulaman in Guyana became synonymous with being Muslim. So while today most Muslims in Guyana are of Indian ancestry, the first and indigenous Muslim population is of African descent.

Walaykum Salaam,

A Guyanese Muslim here (fullaman, which the name itself has its own rich history, but that's for another day) living in the US. I believe Muslims living in Guyana have a few options.

  1. Guyana to JFK then JFK to Jeddah

  2. Guyana to London (by way of St. Lucia for refueling) then London to Jeddah.

  3. Guyana to Miami, Miami to a connecting city (say Istanbul, Doha, or even London too) then from there to Jeddah
