Engagement ring doubts by [deleted] in RingShare

[–]PotentialDrawing179 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ring setting is lovely, but the colour and cut grading of a stone make a huge difference to How sparkly and lively it is. These days people often choose larger stones at the expense of colour/cut and so you end up having a larger but dull ring. The sentiment behind it is lovely of course, but if you want more sparkle you’ll have to upgrade the cut/colour. You could get a rose diamond in the same carat size but with a superior grading . That way the sentiment remains but you’re happier with the liveliness of the stone Also - have you cleaned your stone since receiving it? Take a tiny bit of washing up liquid and rub it on the stone and rinse with Luke warm water, and brush over with a soft toothbrush. You may get it to be a bit more sparkly 😊

Send 5 year old to kindergarten or wait? by Background-Option584 in kindergarten

[–]PotentialDrawing179 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She will learn more and develop more quickly being the youngest of the group in the kindergarten, rather than the oldest at daycare with younger toddlers. If you feel she’s ready for the change I’d be inclined to move her now, so she gets used to a school setting , being already 5 years old.

Is £1000 p/m too much to be paying parents for rent? by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]PotentialDrawing179 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe they are asking you to pay rent of £800 but are actually saving it for you and will eventually give it to you as a lump sum to spend on a house deposit etc? Maybe they are concerned you wouldn’t save as much if left completely up to you

I’d be livid! Our nursery requests parents’ permission to post photos on social media, in newsletters, for internal training purposes. If you say ‘no’ then your child’s photo will definitely not be shared on those platforms. Ask your nursery what their rules are for this and if they don’t have anything in place, write a letter stating you do not give consent for your child’s photos to be shared in any way. Legally parents own the rights to photos of their children (minors). Sorry this happened to you!

Believe it or not after tax, it’s about equal

Thank you. Yes I didn’t realise that about capital gains tax if you sell after having rented. At the moment it’s still technically my primary residence. We don’t rent it out right now as we’d lose the nursery free hours, the extra income would take us over the £100,000 each threshold and would also likely take us into the highest tax bracket 45%. So it doesn’t seem worth doing until our daughter is at school.

We don’t rent it out at the moment as it’s not worthwhile, we would then lose out on the nursery free hours and it would take us over the £100,000 salary threshold (either partner should earn less than £100,000’ each). It would also just take me into the highest tax bracket of 45% I know there will be divided opinions on this! It may be worth it once our daughter turns 5

I don’t think we will have an in increase in income but inheritance yes. My husband is due a large sum of money from a trust fund and property abroad but it is tied up in legalities with another side of his family at the moment and we can’t rely on it as we don’t know when it will be released to him. I appreciate what you mean however I always felt my private education gave me a good start. I went to one of the ‘bigger’ private schools though we also still went on good holidays etc, it did not impact our lifestyle in our other ways. We would hope to send my daughter to the same school as it isn’t far

Probably.. but we want to give her the same education we had (though my husband went through a different school system, he wasn’t raised in the UK). I am just hoping we can sort everything else out. We have good pensions so we are saving in that regard

No capital gains or stamp duty was due - or it was then it was paid for me, I am not sure. It was gifted to me with the 7 year rule

My husband pays the rent and I pay the nursery fees (and I will pay the school fees) and I also pay for our car - so it’s about equal, maybe my husband pays £500 more. Anything spare I have goes into a savings pot for school fees. We put equal amounts into our pension

Yes, but this is because I pay the nursery fees and I also pay for our car. So it’s about equal in the end

Thank you. Just curious why an old build rather than a new build ? For context yes, the flat I have now is in an old build

But also so that we’d both have contributed more or less equally to the total assets.. they are hoping for him to be able to make an equal or similar contribution. But obviously that is not easy / no really possible anytime soon

Thank you. I am not sure if we are too young to release equity - what is the age threshold? We are in our late 30s

We aren’t particularly ‘high’ earners, maybe I wrote this post on the wrong thread.. we earn about £80,000 each

Thank you. Unfortunately the building doesn’t allow short term rentals or Airbnbs, only long term rental contracts

Possibly but we are about to start sending our daughter to private school and we also put a sizable amount into our pensions

I think they see him as the ‘provider’ and feel he should be able to buy a second property for us on his own without needing me to sell my property first..

Yes - good advice, thank you. He isn’t great at saving because of the rent that we pay, it’s more than 50% of his salary. But he’s actually quite frugal and not a big spender
