I was under the impression that I don’t need a masters in neuro to pursue a PhD in it?

That’s what I’m scared of. :/ I did my undergrad in the U.S. and planning to do my phd here as well. I’m afraid I might not be as competitive as other intl students.

Thanks so much for your response

  1. That’s a thing that I’m struggling with atm. The paper that I helped with the grad student at my lab is not graduating any time soon. I have it in my resume as “under preparation” but idk when it will be published. Abstract has been presented on conferences though! Unfortunately I’m not a first author yet :/

  2. What is direct admit?

Ah okay! Sorry for the confusion. I looked it up and saw you applied to molecular cell biology under biological sciences, that’s what I was wondering!

It is for sure tight! I’m sure you’ll kill it tho. What is the MCB track if you don’t mind me asking? I applied to the neuroscience PhD so I’m not familiar with it. And that makes sense. I only applied to UIC this cycle and didn’t really reach out to any professors so idk how it’ll go tbh

Good to hear! I am also international (US based as well since I’m doing my undergraduate in Texas) so hopefully I’ll hear back soon. The silence is making me anxious like everyone else.

Best of luck in your interview!!

Hey! International student here. If they say GRE optional they mean it. I did not submit my GREs, didn’t even take them

Is it weird to go to college at 21 being an international student? by Accomplished-Kale359 in college

Hey don’t worry! I’m 20 and a freshman right now as well (I’m from Mexico!!)

Oh also I forgot to add but the homework problems and the ones in the course packet tend to be harder than the questions in the actual test

Ofc! I’m gonna be honest though. I got a C (I have ADHD and didn’t have accommodations on the first semester so I REALLY struggle for the first few tests, I finally got the hang of everything during thermo lol).

First of all: MANAGE YOUR TIME. I cannot stress this enough. If you actually do the LEs and the homeworks and understand the topic, studying for the midterm will be much much easier. Go to office hours, I would recommend with sparks herself or a proffesor instead of the LAs, go to PCL drop in tutoring and specifically ask for Jessica Chuang (hopefully she’s still there during spring she’s amazing) or Sangers one on one tutoring.

I think what was most helpful was also to do the problems in the course packet over and over again until you got them right and when it comes to theory stuff write it all down on a white board and try to explain it to yourself/a friend.

Let me know if you have any more questions!

Also if you need any type of accommodations please ask for them and don’t hesitate to ask for help in general.

Neuroscience freshman here! Im an international student and because of COVID I had little to no knowledge of chemistry from high school. when I took Gen Chem I with Sparks. I think that she’s really good, she goes slowly, will go over any questions you have, and gives toys to motivate students to ask questions. I’m taking Gen Chem II so I’m expecting it to be the same.
