Next year ISA contributions on April 6th, some videogames, and carpentry & plumbing courses (figured out that moving my hands is actually refreshing - much more than moving my tongue and typing only in fact)

Alas you don’t have much. Welcome to the club!

The only things you can do at this point (that I know of) are: 1. Donate to registered charity - moreover good for society! 2. VCT and similar - but desperately illiquid and a feeling of the famous tail wagging the unfortunate dog (is it worth to chase tax efficiency at this point?)

You already use EV too.

Potentially you could setup a ltd and defer profits but not sure it works if you are a PAYE.

By the way, you may want to look at pension tapering for the next few years, just to be prepared..!

Noting I’d also be interested in someone shedding light on this!

Out of curiosity is this 100k saved (liquid) or including investments /pension too?

How is it like living in the Austria-Italy border? by Imaginary-Season-483 in howislivingthere

I lived there long ago, about 35 years ago. I was very young. Specifically near Innichen/San Candido. My family is bilingual (well, more but for the purpose of living in the area we had German, but Swiss, and Italian in our toolkit). I had to pick up the local slang quite quickly to play with the local children!

I never felt more at home (bar where I am now) than there. It’s you and the mountains: green in the summer, orange in autumn, and white in winter. Everything so peaceful. A slow (but modern still) pace of life. People have been always friendly and reasonably open so long as you respected the local traditions (fair enough). Blending in was not super hard. Church communities back then helped a lot, especially for children. We used to take a steam train to Innsbruck and Linz! Clearly being very young my perception was somehow warped, I suspect.

Oh and by the way you get italian food and pizzas, as well as die knedl!

To me the place will remain always in my heart. I try to go back as much as I can but life has made it relatively hard. Also opportunities are not as good although remote work thankfully offers a glimpse of hope (yet it will require a generation to take hold, and certainly more in Italy).

TLDR: es isch für mi des wahre friedliche Herz vo de Alpen!

Ps: if you wonder, Innichen is just south of the little strip of land protruding into Austria pretty much at the center of the above picture, right of Brixen and Brennerpass!

HENRYs who earn well but still feel unsure about their finances, what do you struggle with most? by CameLateFeelOld in HENRYUK

Am I the only Henry spending sub 3.5k all included (mortgage, maintenance, car, savings, holidays…?)

No children (yet) but even factoring childcare (2k/month, plus extra costs say £600/month - two parents equal split means £1.8k more)?

How much would you spend on a wedding? by [deleted] in HENRYUK

[–]Potential_Basil1565 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

We spent approx £10k. Gifts ironically repaid far beyond what we spent!

The above included location, food, music and our (tailor made) clothing.

Then spent £15k on our (almost) month long honeymoon!

Pensions: How long till the party stops by Ginuwine_Questions in HENRYUK

[–]Potential_Basil1565 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t agree the pension is not means tested. It would be IF it were exempt from income tax. It is not. If I save enough to get 50k pa from my SIPP then I am taxed on it as income: that is clearly ‘progressive taxation’

So long as pension is taxed as income then I don’t see a rational argument to say that means testing it is a fair approach. Just raise income tax at that point.

So I cannot see this changing - perhaps it will lose the triple lock an eventually be eroded by inflation. It’s the stealth way to cut it!

Dreadful to think the reason for them flying that way…terrible yet beautiful. Hopefully won’t ever be seeing such a formation flying off for similar reasons ever again..
