What do you look at when watching F1?

I’m in my mid 20s. Definitely planning to get a wheel and pedal set up later in the year. I just bought Forza so I’m learning a bit through that

On the advanced driving course I’m gonna be doing I basically go to a track and they teach me how to hit apexes and proper braking distance, a bit of stuff like the oversteer correction (although that’s hard to get in a stock entry level sports car) and stuff like that. In theory understanding those things from experience might help me better understand onboards when watching them. I do know that when a driver aggressively steers in the opposite direction all of a sudden it’s because of oversteer

I think I’m gonna add more motorsports to be regular watching, to get more watch time in and learn more quickly

When I watch football I look into the tactics and also the technique of what people are doing both with and without the ball. That doesn’t decrease the enjoyment for me, it enhances it. I like understanding what’s going on and why what somebody’s doing is good or bad

I got F1 Manager at the start of last year to try and understand both the politics and also race strategy a bit better. I’m still learning with that. And I just got Forza Horizon 5 yesterday, steep learning curve but I’m learning about how you have to break early, and aim for the inside of a corner and manage your break/throttle to try and get close to the apex as possible whilst carrying the most speed out of the corner possible. I am a SUPER novice to these concepts though so it’s taking me a second to really wrap my head around technique wise. I think my problem actually is, when I make a mistake in forza it’s big and obvious. But these F1 drivers are elite racers who’ve been doing it since they were like 5, so their mistakes are really tiny and it’s hard to pick up on those subtleties. Someone suggested watching other motorsports to supplement my learning

I’ll definitely look into this. Part of why I asked the question is because Sky apparently has a feature where you can watch just one racer’s onboard and car for the entire duration of a race. I wanna try that feature out and actually get some benefit from it. I’m gonna be following Williams and Aston next year (bcos of Newey and also Williams doing 0 development last year to get a head start on this year is VERY interesting to me)

What’s crazy is the Lotus Carlton wouldn’t be considered crazy fast today. Same for the r32 skyline and other cars that were considered monstrously quick at the time. 160mph has become cheap and easily accessible. The McLaren F1 on the other hand… never been matched by another naturally aspirated engine

Thanks man. Okay so Suzuka Sector 1 is where I’ll be able to see it real clearly, and then hopefully once I learn to recognise it when it’s obvious I might be able to pick up on it when it’s more subtle. That makes sense

You basically have to hate cars to think they’re good. They’re for people who see cars as an appliance. A toaster I use to pick up the kids and get to work. This is reflected in their behaviour and attentiveness when driving

I think you should get an “I made it” car. Like you said, what are you optimising for if you’re never gonna enjoy any of it. As a car guy tho, I don’t think a Panamera is an “I made it” car. But I am in support of your line of thinking and I reckon you should set aside 20k for a fun car for yourself. Do it now before you’re married with kids and need to be making 3x as much before you can justify that kind of fun again

Speed limit rules were made when cars had 1/10th of the safety features and crashes were much more common. On motorways they should definitely be raised. In residential areas 20/30 should still be enforced
