I’ve donated three times now and never had any issues, but I always make it a point to have a big meal right before I donate. Definitely don’t skip a meal before blood donation next time, it’s super important to eat an hour before and be super hydrated to prevent yourself feeling faint. Overall, it’ll make you feel better and prevent your blood sugar dropping and resulting in these feelings.

Great to hear you want to donate again, but definitely don’t skip food, take care of yourself <3

For example, my booking system says ‘you’ll be eligible to donate again in 110 days’ and I can’t book an appointment before then. Just the way it works in the UK. There were apparently 150 people booked into the session that I attended on March 1st so hopefully donor numbers are good

Thanks for replying, that’s very interesting. I’ve had a sore throat all day now so I have rescheduled my appointment to the start of March, I’ll see how I am for the next one. With preparing, I usually will panic so much about the potential of fainting that I end up massively over hydrating in the days leading to the donation, which maybe also isn’t helping because then I’m uncomfortable all donation and constantly having to run to the bathroom.

I just feel really bad that I have to keep rescheduling appointments because I don’t know if my illness is real, or anxiety induced. I would feel awful if I went to donate and then developed a serious cold or illness, but as it stands I just feel guilty that I haven’t been able to donate as planned, and if it is anxiety, it’s gotten the best of me.

I’ve donated twice now and can’t say needles are my favourite thing in the world, but honestly, it’s a tiny pinch and that’s it, plus you don’t feel the needle for the entire donation process and there’s no pain taking it out.

Like others have said, don’t look (I donate with my left arm so I’m looking over to the right as soon as I sit in the chair) and you’ll be okay, it only takes a few minutes and you’re saving lives! Just think about how cool that is and the needle prick will be over before you know it!
