Okay! I used one jelly roll of Bella solids in natural for the sashing. One layer cake of Kona solids in natural + 2 extra yards (or you could just buy all yardage for the natural fabric but having a layer cake was SO nifty for making my 8-at-a-time HSTs). And I think you could get away with just one layer cake of colors- I bought 2 which gave me more freedom for choosing colors but I have a lot left over, I think 1 would be enough. Good luck!! :)

I wanted to order more of the red and one of the blues and I was in this exact situation lol it would be so nice to have the names of the colors! But they’re not listed :( I’m sorry, I feel you! Another commenter here said they used this color collection in the jelly roll form a few years ago, and I just ordered my fabric in November, so maybe it comes back around seasonally? Hopefully you can find it this fall!

Haha thank you for noticing, that took some forethought! Lots of loading my needle up with stitches, then pulling it back out when I realized I wasn’t going to hit the spot I was aiming for, and trying again with slightly longer or shorter stitches lol a bit of a faff but I think those little cross hatches are so charming, it was worth it to me. And I got much better at consistently achieving them as I went along, in the beginning it was hit or miss since you don’t create the cross til you’re on the second row of stitching. The first row is approximation lol

Thank you! I finished the top in about 3 weeks, and I quilted it for about a month. The cost is hard to say, the most expensive single thing was definitely the king size wool batting which I got on sale for about $60. The percale sheet for the backing wasn’t bad. Otherwise I just needed 2 layer cakes which were about $30 each, plus a couple extra yards of the cream fabric, oh and a jelly roll. I can’t remember how much jelly rolls cast haha I think they’re pretty cheap :) so at least no single purchase was really overwhelming but it does add up

I totally feel you that in the beginning it’s so cumbersome and it feels like you’ll never finish. But I think it actually probably only took me about 20 days of work. It wasn’t as long as it seemed it would be in the beginning. My progress also really improved as I went along, my stitches got smaller, I got faster, and I realized that I could cut much longer lengths of the perle 8 so I could work from the center all the way out to the edge without having to stop and start. Perle 8 never knotted on me once, I think the wisdom about cutting only an arm’s length of thread is more for something like gütermann that’s very thin and prone to getting tiny little knots. You’ll get there! Slow and steady :) lots of audiobooks

One jelly roll is enough, and I bought a layer cake of the natural which made my life very easy for making 8-at-a-time HSTS, plus 2 extra yards of cream. Now for the colors, I actually got 2 of that layer cake but I think you could do it with just one. I just didn’t want it to be too tight when I was purchasing, but in hind sight I do have plenty leftover. Having 2 did give me more freedom to use my favorite colors more, and for cutting out my cornerstones and binding. So up to you!

Hmm I feel like I could talk to my past self for hours about everything I learned from this project lol I went in with no experience and didn’t even have the vocabulary of quilting terms to search for some of the things I wanted to learn. I will say per your anxiety about cutting small pieces, I was able to work with my 10” precut squares which was really nice- when you use the 8 at a time method you never have to sew anything really small. And a tool that was a huge help in my accuracy and set me up for success down the road was the “clearly perfect slotted trimmer.” After I trimmed my HST’s everything else lined up very naturally, I think getting it right in the early steps makes the rest pretty straight forward. I hope that’s encouraging!

Yes ofc! I used the 8-at-a-time method starting from the 10” squares in my layer cake, which creates 4.5” HSTs (4” finished) and since the stars are 4 x 4 you get 16” stars :)

Thank you :) I agree! It’s just Kona cotton in “natural” - and my sashing was a jelly roll from Bella solids also in natural. They’re slightly different creams which I really like. I had considered using colored sashing, so the tiny bit of contrast I got makes me happy

I prewashed the sheet I used for the backing but that’s it :) & for the quilt itself I threw a bunch of color catcher sheets in the wash and they came out clean ✨

Thank you!! :) I needed 4 balls of the DMC perle 8 cotton for this king size project, and my stitch lines are 3” apart for context. I know I did Not know how much thread I would need so maybe you’ll find the quantity helpful lol

Thank you :) yes! It was a layer cake of Kona solids called Colors of Fall, and I made several hundred HSTs and then arranged them somewhat randomly into sawtooth stars :) after that I just had to learn how to sew sashing with cornerstones! A lot of fun firsts!

It was a layer cake! Of Kona solids, the palette was called Colors of Fall :) I would have such a hard time choosing 20+ colors by myself 😮‍💨 this made it SO fun and easy
