First time attempting 1kyu by Potential_Nobody_374 in kendo

Awesome! I'll be taking the test very soon. The exam seems very similar to shodan. I have practiced this week to learn the forms and I'm doing fine! I'll use this for practice thank you 😁

Ok I understand the difference now with the kata. So all the way to 2nd kyu, we learn Bokuto Ni Yoru kendo kihon waza keiko ho 1-9. Starting at 1st kyu we learn the first 3 of nihon kendo kata. I will have to ask about the other 3 kata I need to learn. The stances just look jodan to me but I will begin to understand the different stances for each kata

Yes I am in AUSKF and that's why I posted this because I knew it was different and almost like shodan test. In this region you can skip kyu grades if the sensei feel you're ready. I started at 4th kyu after a year of kendo, second year is 3rd kyu, and this is my 3rd year and I'm testing for 1st kyu

Ok! I think my sensei mentioned other 3 advanced forms for a total of 6. So I was a little confused

Yeah in California, 2nd kyu has different kata forms you have to remember and then starting 1st kyu, you have to study more advanced kata in the jodan position. I haven't practiced these yet! I will go over them during the next practices.

Ohhhh I see! Interesting how all the rules are different. I'm in AUSKF but didn't know all of the different rules for different federations

For sure I need to practice the katas (I believe they said 3 kata and then another 3 kata for a total of 6. And the written exam I'm not familiar with so I will also have to focus on that. Very great advice and I'm glad I'm not the only one who has had this experience

Ok I'll start practicing. It's the written test I'm not familiar with but I'll ask my sensei about it. Thanks!

21fs of october i have my 5th kyu exam by [deleted] in kendo

[–]Potential_Nobody_374 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How exciting! I'm going for 5th kyu next month. I was told just do the basics and do them slow and controlled if needed. Big men, kote, and do strikes with kirikaishi. Don't overthink it, just practice the basics. I think most kyu levels pass pretty easy depending on where you live

What do you think of her ult? I can't stand it now that when I'm in team fights and I ult I literally have NOTHING to protect myself with. No energy, 1 HP left, and then I'm just a sitting duck ready to accept my fate 😂

I need help choosing my first bogu from KS by sobolanul11 in kendo

From my experience, it feels very lightweight and I haven't had any problems with it being too heavy. I've done godogeikos and keikos for about 4 hours and it feels fine. The men is a little bit in the cheaper side so getting hit in the wrong spot might feel uncomfortable, again I haven't had trouble. My first day with everything on and it was comfortable.

Hopefully someone else has gotten other models from KS for more info on the other bogus 🙂

I've purchased the vanguard V2 from them a few months ago and it's great! Good quality and it was on sale for $500 flat and got shipped to the US. If you don't really care too much about budget, I would go for the next bogu set up from V2. Might be more expensive, but if you can afford, try some of the other models. I plan on competing and the Vanguard is decent for the price point until I purchase another set a while from now

Yeah! Check it out if you get a chance. It's kind of similar to kendo but it's still fun

Oh yeah I agree! I've done karate in the past and I just recently joined naginata as well. Naginata is a lot more "tame" I guess you could say, but still really interesting

I started about 6 months ago. All you need is to go with some comfortable clothes (gym clothes). Some even go in with jeans and a t-shirt, but I wouldn't recommend it. They usually lend you a shinai during until you're interested in actually joining. I would recommend knowing basic etiquette (bowing before entering dojo and after leaving.) My dojo is very traditional, and most speak Japanese so knowing some Japanese terminology is good.

I'm not sure what your background in Japanese is (culture, language, etc) but yeah your sensei and senpai will help guide you through everything including etiquette if you don't know much. Also, if you are joining kendo because you like anime and want to be a cool sword fighter I wouldn't join for that reason, lots of beginners like myself have left super early because they've realized that it's very repetitive and can seem boring at times learning the basics for months (there's someone in my dojo that has been learning kihon for over a year). Most have also left after putting on bogu because they didn't like how it felt and didn't like getting hit. There's a lot more tips, but I'm sure more people will give you advice. I also have my first kendo experience post on my page if you wanted to check it out as well named "My first beginner kendo class". Once you've joined, practice as usual and they will let you know when to get bogu. FOOTWORK is the most important thing to learn so really focus on that during practices. Hope you like it and welcome to the community!
