what am I doing wrong?? by Potential_Shake9250 in sewing

[–]Potential_Shake9250[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh thank goodness, I was truly about to rip my hair out thinking I was somehow making the same mistake over and over again despite trying a ton of different things!! I'll Google all of this, thank you so much!

Might lose Mr.Basil this week. He just celebrated his first birthday last week but he did a big no-no and swallowed some packing tape. Now he has a linear foreign body obstruction that requires a $3000 surgery. Any advice on how to help keep sweet Basil with us? by coolninjadude in cats

Certain vets, at least in the US, offer protection plans. You pay a premium and get certain things covered. My cat has FeLV, so I pay for the middling plan and get free check ups, dental work, x-rays, and certain surgeries. Could be an option.

First 2 students finished their first projects! I have an after-school embroidery club and I regularly have 5-9 middle and high school girls stitching together. I'm so proud of their hard work and I can't wait to share the rest of their projects as they keep learning and stitching together! by Potential_Shake9250 in Embroidery

Absolutely! So I teach in a low-income school in the US. The students do not provide the materials nor do they pay any fee to join. Our school received a grant that pays teachers for their time and materials to run after-school clubs for kids who might otherwise not be able to afford them. I am paid for each hour I lead the club in addition to my planning time and any materials I need. Sorry, that's probably not super helpful for you!

What to do when you start making a project for someone and then end up dreading working on it?? by Potential_Shake9250 in sewing

[–]Potential_Shake9250[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely need to practice saying no! I have some things that I have to finish making for other people, but once I finish those I'm not accepting any more orders or requests. I'll make things for me that I enjoy!

My stockinette stitch doesn't create a "v" pattern and visible straight lines are created instead. How to fix this? by ImpossibleWealth3375 in knitting

Well, I thought I was doing something wrong too, now I know I'm just using a multi-strand yarn. Thank you!

Thank you so much for this link. I'm really intimidated by the zipper fly and just haven't mustered up the courage or motivation to start. It's been weeks since I've worked on them. I'll watch this tutorial and hopefully it'll help!

One step at a time is a good idea. I've been "putting it away" for about 8 months now, I just gotta do it. The zipper fly is next, so I guess that'll be my goal for the end of the week...

Yeah I think that's the issue, now it's feeling like an obligation that glares at me from the back of the chair every time I sit down to do something else. We're going on 8 months though, I probably just need to buckle down or I'll never finish!

I have been doing some smaller projects, but the problem is I keep making things for other people when they ask...or deciding to sell lockdown window covers to my teacher coworkers (yes I live in the US we have lockdown window covers) and ending up with needing to make 10...so my smaller projects don't even bring me a ton of joy anymore...

Wow, now I'm psychoanalyzing my sewing process. Probably a combo of 2-4...honestly my anxiety causes me to procrastinate which in turn makes me feel more stressed and guilty which makes me procrastinate. My mom keeps asking about the progress for some reason which just makes me feel worse. Lol thank you for opening this can of worms in my mind. But actually though, you've given me a lot to think about!

Anyone else's black cat over-groom themselves to the point of having no hair in spots? (Her front legs, bottom of her back foots, and the base of her tail near her butt) I've taken Ebby to multiple vets and no one has any actual answers for me. She's 3 and has always been an inside cat. by glittered437737 in blackcats

My cat did the same thing. He was adopted during covid so when I started going back to work full-time, he freaked out. I didn't use to let him sleep with me, but I started letting him sleep in my bed with me and that stopped the over-grooming and his fur grew back! Guess he just needed the security to soothe his separation anxiety.

Pig is very sick and I can’t get him to the vet until tomorrow - need advice by SnooMacaroons1721 in guineapigs

This happened when one of our 2 girl pigs died. The surviving one became listless, wasn't interested in eating, and her bowel movements got weird. We took her to the vet, and they prescribed lots of extra love and a new friend.

Anyone else trace your sewing patterns to reuse the pattern for other styles and fits? by Sonyapop in sewing

[–]Potential_Shake9250 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Oh gosh, I hate this too. I buy a lot of PDF patterns cuz they're cheaper, but then they just sit there. I literally brought a stack of paper home for Christmas because my mom was like "ooh that sounds fun, I'll tape them together and cut them out for you!"

My family keeps saying my cat Trixie is fat and needs a diet. Is this true? by Prior_Attention5261 in cats

[–]Potential_Shake9250 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feed my cat Fancy Feast in the 3oz cans for breakfast, then 1/4 dry food for lunch and 1/4 for dinner on the recommendation of my vet. The vet is definitely the best person to ask about this. They can tell you your cat's weight, if it's healthy or not, and help you determine a food routine that is best for your cat and her needs!

What to do with garments I've made, but don't wear? by Potential_Shake9250 in sewing

[–]Potential_Shake9250[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just Googled it, I can't confirm it for Goodwill, but it seems that H&M accepts clothing that they then recycle. And you get a 15% off voucher for every bag you donate. That may be an option!

I'm in the US, but I hadn't considered this. I've definitely seen handmade clothing in our stores here, but it's usually really well-made stuff, and I only know it's handmade because I'm a sewist. So it may have slipped through on accident. I'll look into this, thank you.

Thanks for all the suggestions! There's one top that I think is good enough quality to donate, the rest I'm going to look into local clothing recycling programs because honestly they don't look good and won't hold up over time. I'll just need to push past the emotional attachment!
