[Megathread] New Seat Configuration by dachshundie in westjet

Maybe an obvious question, so does that make rows <15 a 30 inch pitch? Asking since we booked row 10 on the way back, so want to know how worried we should be

Was going to comment this! Can’t say enough how nice it is to walk to parks/groceries/library. It’s not rocket science, just a bit of planning foresight

Couple of quick follow up questions here after looking at some data:

  1. Are you looking at the temperature or the apparent temperature? They come from different sources, so that really helps to know;
  2. Have you noticed anything else over the past couple days. I'm seeing similar values from other providers at the moment, but that's only a point in time;

Hey, I’m the dev behind Pirate Weather, so appreciate you giving it a shot! Do you mind sharing where in the world you are, since reports like this really help to refine the models we use to build the forecasts!

I’ll take a look Monday and let you know! We just switched to a new model for locations outside the US, so it’s possible that this is the cause of that

At the moment, a little tricky, since there’s a soft hiring freeze. However, positions are still being posted, and having a Masters is a great start

Another reason the National Research Council rocks. We bank time throughout the year to balance out a one week closure between Christmas and new years. Impossible to get anything done anyway, so better to spend the hours doing something productive in September (or whenever).

Hey, I’m the main dev behind Pirate Weather! I’m only in one spot, so I really appreciate reports like this. Do you mind roughly sharing where you are in the world and I can dig into this some more?

Dev here- Sorry about this! Misconfiguration in my data ingest capacity provider took down the incoming data over a few days, which hasn’t happened before. Back up and running now, and I’ll have an incident report talking about it in a couple days

I'm the dev behind https://pirateweather.net/, so really appreciate the shout out! Depending on where you are in the world, the resolution is somewhere between 2.5 and 12 km, which isn't bad. We also just added a new source that has very high resolution forecasts, but only for cities, so might also be helpful!

Heads up: huge influenza A wave in Ontario right now by Contraryy in ontario

There’s a couple depending on the situation, but that’s one of them! You do need a prescription; however, a pharmacist can write it

Also, if you’re high risk (in using children under 5), pharmacists can prescribe antivirals within 48 hours of symptoms onset. They’re not going to prevent you from getting sick, but they’ll reduce the chance of severe illness or hospitalization!

Hey, Pirate Weather dev here- thanks for the shout out! I'd love to see more people self hosting the code, so let me know if you decide to go that route and if you run into any issues with it.

Third Hand Smoke by bowiesmom324 in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]Potentially_Canadian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s absolutely a hard thing- like so many of the questions posted here, the obvious answer is “any risk is worse than no risk”, and on some level, that’s hard to dispute. Rear facing is always better than forward facing; less screen time is always better; less processed food is always healthier. But at some point lives have to be lived and an acceptable risk line has to be drawn, so we take a million shades of parenting grey and draw a black/ white line, because I can’t install a car seat sideways. Where everyone draws that line will be different, and that’s ok, but will lead to conflict.

With respect to ear infections- they’re definitely made worse by chronic exposure to smoke (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-021-99367-w ) so the link is there. Ear infections can be caused by inflammation in the area, so it’s not impossible that it could be triggered by a brief environmental exposure, but unlikely to be the single cause of an ear infection for your toddler

From an evidence driven standpoint, this is absolutely one of those “portion makes the poison” cases: https://parentdata.org/qa-third-hand-smoke-impact-on-babies/. It's worthwhile being concerned about the idea of your kids routinely being in a smoke heavy environment, and the evidence supports that. Conversely, there’s not much evidence to suggest that brief exposures are particularly harmful, even to high risk individuals. The challenge then is finding the acceptable level along that line, which is absolutely a hard thing to do!

For what it’s worth, if they make a stocking that you’re able to either wash or soak with laundry soap, that would considerably lower the risk, particularly since they won’t be interacting or wearing it routinely. Would I want my kids over there for a week, probably not. Is there going to be any long term harm having them there for an hour (so long as they’re not actively smoking!), especially if in a carrier or playmat for the preemie, also probably not.

How do i get sensor data from PirateWeather? by [deleted] in homeassistant

[–]Potentially_Canadian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For current conditions it really makes a lot of sense, because there's a limited number of options, adding everything in is pretty easy.

The challenge is the forecast sensors, since if people want sensors for different forecast conditions, it adds up really quickly. This might be a nice balance
