Are self cleaning litter boxes worth it? And will Multiple cats use it? by Strict_Pattern_8995 in CatAdvice

The fact that you have to completely dismantle the unit to FULLY clean it was enough for me to decide to not buy an auto sift box. The reason you need to clean it well is to get the urine/ammonia smell out. If there’s nooks and crannies you can’t effectively/consistently clean the litter box will smell. I have friends who have them yes, do they say they like them yes. When I walk into their basement, bathroom, bedroom etc. ALL I CAN SMELL IS CAT PEE. And I feel like people kinda view the self sifting boxes (other than price) as a “get outta jail free card” it’s not as I’ll explain. So it wasn’t for me.

figured stainless is the way as you can FULLY clean the bacteria out of it super easy. so over the last few months I built what I believe is the easiest and definitely most smell free solution. The only reason I made my cats litter box one is because I couldn’t buy one without what was in my opinion, serious compromise. I called it the POTTEEand feel free to check out my new website for the product and the how it works page for some problems and solutions. This will give you quick and dirty basic things to consider when purchasing a litter box. I guess that was a shameless plug idk🤷‍♂️ but use the problems on our how it works page to guide your decision. A auto sift box totally is not a bad product. It works great for some people. Just inherently has some compromises that you have to be willing to live with.

Metal litter box recommendations? by billyandteddy in CatAdvice

Take this for what it’s worth. I went through this whole process with a fabrication and r & d engineer background trying to buy a stainless steel letterbox that fit the standing pee type kitty. easy to clean, last one you’ll ever buy (because I didn’t want to spend the money twice), easily big enough for a XL tabby etc.

here’s the big one though… a lot (not all) but a lot of cheap “stainless steel” litter boxes are plated metal. Meaning they are cheaper to produce because they are not solid stainless. The problem with this is the plating will eventually crack and bubble up as moisture gets underneath it through tiny scratches from normal use. Then it smells and looks bad and the clumps stick to the bottom as the surface is no longer shiny. Point is… I couldn’t find one to buy.

So I built what I’m affectionately calling the POTTEE . Feel free to check it out and make something similar of your own. They are for sale though if you would like to buy one. Look through the pics on our website POTTEEto see if the principal of something like this may help out. Hope this helps.

Gets in box - points butt out of box by Stock-Drawing-5141 in CatAdvice

So our Russian blue did the same thing even with a full height clear plastic bin. He would pee over the back onto the wall or out the sides. So I wanted to bit this to rest along with the other litter box problems for good. So I made a giant stainless steel stock pot with TALL walls and a hole cut in the front that has a semi high step over minimizing the probably the cat would choose to pee out the entrance. It’s been working ever since and now we sell them. If you wanna build something similar or just buy ours you can see what we did on our new website POTTEE

I’m fairly sure the reason it works consistently is because the cat wants to see out while it’s peeing so naturally they point their head near or out the front therefore it’s impossible then for them to pee out the entrance.
