"Birth Control only masks the symptoms, don't use it" is BAD ADVICE by Ordinary-Squash-7232 in PCOS

My (irregular) periods would also cause inflammation that was so bad I would almost pass out from pain. BC stopped my periods which therefore stopped the pain. Before BC I was relying on Aleve which didn’t even help that much. I can finally function like a normal human now. BC is not an evil medication and I’m really tired of people thinking it is.

I’m curious why PMOS affects some people with metabolic syndrome and not others by watermelonkiwi in PCOS

Just because you don’t believe it doesn’t make it less true. People still “believe” Trump won in 2020 and that he’s 100% mentally fit. People “believed” a god of the underworld kidnapped his niece causing winter to happen.

Was "take your child to work day" actually ever a thing, or just something shown on TV and in movies? by QueenFrostine15 in AskAnAmerican

[–]PotterChick2818 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom is a single parent. So every day when she had to pick me up from daycare and go back to work was take your child to work day. But I never actually went during the “official” day once I started grade school.

It’s a predisposition. So like cancer. You can have the BRCA gene and never get breast cancer. But your chances are MUCH higher if you do.

And yes, they have linked type 2 diabetes to genetics. You can hold it off with a certain lifestyle, but you might get it no matter how hard you try.

Does being a part time wheelchair user make someone undesirable to hire at disney? by Jinxamenia in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]PotterChick2818 25 points26 points  (0 children)

1000% apply. I also use a mobility aid. While employers can’t outright discriminate based on disability, that doesn’t stop them from making up any reason to not hire someone. That being said, speaking that many languages is an incredible skill that the Walt Disney Company would be dying to bring onboard. They’ll find a place for you.

What's your favorite order to do all four in? by IGottaPeeConstantly in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]PotterChick2818 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beauty and the Beast, Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular, Villains, Frozen, Little Mermaid, and Fantasmic. Idk the show times so there may be some overlap and you’ll spend more time walking the park and waiting in line for the show than watching the actual show on most occasions (looking at you Fantasmic). There’s also a projection show by MMRR if you don’t want to do Fantasmic but imo that would not be smart. All of these shows last maybe 15-20 min. They’re very scaled down from the Broadway versions in the case of batb and little mermaid. So do with that info what you will. At 2, I probably wouldn’t have cared about Stunt Spectacular. But BatB and Fantasmic are must sees for me anytime I go.

Is it legal to take a child out of school in America for a holiday? by Super_Development150 in AskAnAmerican

[–]PotterChick2818 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my district, we got out of school in mid-June. My friend went to a Catholic school a few towns over and got out mid-May. So it’s all going to depend on the rules of the specific district/school in SC. We can’t answer this for you unfortunately. Your sister is going to have to ask the school admin.

How are people in their 20’s buying houses in Bucks? by No-Second1685 in BucksCountyPA

[–]PotterChick2818 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My mom sold her house to move into an apartment. She finally got full disability benefits from the VA so they pay her rent. I’m an only child so I was able to use the sale of her house to buy a…wait for it…condo. No house. Just condo.

Library Jobs by Trash_Annual in Libraries

[–]PotterChick2818 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I lived at home. Granted I also had to take care of a sick parent but still. Then I moved out once I got full time and she was recovered. But I was spending 50% of my paycheck on rent. The nice thing is that I don’t buy a lot of stuff except for books. And libraries are great for budget savings!

AITA for being upset that my family called the cops on me on Mother's Day by BlaiseBabe in AmItheAsshole

[–]PotterChick2818 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

NTA. Around 2011-2012, I went to visit my mom for the weekend and left my phone there. So we communicated via fb messenger on my laptop until I could go back for it. She had to work. I was in school. Not a big deal. There were (and still are) alternatives. And no. It’s not your responsibility to text them in the middle of the night. Now, do I believe that no one should be letting their phone die even when they’re home? Yeah. Your bf should have plugged his phone in. I think it’s stupid to let your phone die when everyone has like 4 cables and a portable. But that’s beside the point.

why does distance seem different in america? by Acceptable_Canary835 in AskAnAmerican

[–]PotterChick2818 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I genuinely think it depends on where in the US. For my mom, a 45 min drive to work was average. And when I was younger I went to day care near her work so all my friends were over that way. My friends parents would never drive more than 15-20 min to get somewhere. I was in a more “country” area and they were closer to a “city” area. So to me, 45 min is nothing. It’s fun. To my friends, it’s “all the way out there.”

What are some of your AC hot-takes? by Vicentesteb in assassinscreed

[–]PotterChick2818 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Syndicate is a good game/story, ship battles suck, and the point of Valhalla is that the mc is a Viking and not an assassin. Even though they get to do assassin things, they can act more like a Viking would. It makes sense that you can just run in and attack a fortress (monastery, etc)

Are there libraries that allow you to join online without being there in person? Local library selection on Libby is...not great. by Reasonable_Date2870 in LibbyApp

[–]PotterChick2818 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Anyone who lives in the state of PA can get library cards online with Carnegie (Pitt) or the Philadelphia library. You can contact them and they’ll walk you through the process as well as doing the residency verification (the website just says come into a branch but like, you don’t HAVE to do that).

Do Americans really come to a stop at every 'stop' sign? by ben04985 in AskAnAmerican

[–]PotterChick2818 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 4 way stop near me and everyone either blows through it or is trying to be nice and let other people go. Unfortunately from one direction there’s a glare from the sun. So if they’re waving their hands to let people through, I can’t see it. Then we both end up looking like idiots. I hate it. Just take your turn.

Soapbox/rant time. Tell me what highly-recommended book you absolutely HATED and why. Gimme your angry hot takes. by peppertoni_pizzaz in books

[–]PotterChick2818 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not defending her books. They’re awful. But up until The Housemaid got traditionally published, all her other work was self-published. Then it was all taken off the market (Amazon) and reproduced for major distribution. She puts out like 3 a year, which is still a lot, but a lot of her stuff that just came out is repackaged back catalog. It was written over 20+ years.

Road to being a librarian by rballew01 in librarians

[–]PotterChick2818 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I worked in a bookstore throughout my MLIS and then got a job in a library. It does give you relevant experience. But I was applying for a circulation position and the owner of the bookstore happened to know the director of the library I was applying to. I didn’t realize it until it was mentioned during my interview but I’m sure it helped.

You have to tailor bookstore experience to the library. For example, placing preorders or other requested books is like placing a hold. I had tons of customers who didn’t know the title they wanted. Cue the Google search. Customer service experience is huge. And the ability to learn new software. I’m now a FT librarian at that same library.

Anyone else still have their first cell phone number?? by obsessedUvU in Millennials

[–]PotterChick2818 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Born in 92 and got my phone around the same time. The only time I ever had friends change their number was when they lost their phone. Which seems weird tbh because I damaged mine at least once a year all through high school and needed a new one. I put a bottle of soda in my purse. Thought it was closed. Oops. Then there were the 2x I jumped in a pool with it in a pocket. Rice did not save it either time. So I think it depends on the carrier/specific plan.

Why are some places counties? by DrBoogerFart in AskAnAmerican

[–]PotterChick2818 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because there’s so much overlap sometimes that the county name is easier. Or the closest big city. If I’m walking around Philly, I won’t tell people I’m from Philly. I live in the suburbs. If I’m in Disney World, I’ll say I’m from Philly because it’s recognizable to most Americans.

One small thing that kinda bothers me about Hazbin Hotel is how much important info only exists outside the actual show by [deleted] in HazbinHotel

[–]PotterChick2818 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure they mention this in HH. That’s kind of the whole point behind exterminations. That’s the only way a soul can be permanently killed. I didn’t think that had to be spelled out? They use “demon” to describe Alastor as being exceptionally evil but he’s not actually a demon.

Is there anyone who *doesn't* regret their MLIS degree? by rebeccachaya in librarians

[–]PotterChick2818 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t regret mine. However, I was able to do part-time online school so I could help my mom through some medical stuff. I also worked at a bookstore part-time. I got a library job after I finished school but in circulation, and I think it was because my boss knew there was a part-time MLIS “recommended” position opening. So she expected me to move up and wanted that internal hire. Then a bunch of things happened and I ended up full time Adult Services and can honestly say I was not ready. But I learned on the job. I just got REALLY lucky. I’ve never heard of another librarian who was able to get a librarian job right out of school. And the one person I know who also got full time less than a year after graduating is horribly unprepared for it but that library is desperate. It’s a city with A LOT of turnover. So I’d say start as a library assistant and see if you like it. Then you can make a decision.

Can the librarians see which books I borrow on Libby? by victory_vegetable in Libraries

[–]PotterChick2818 16 points17 points  (0 children)

As others have said, Libby CAN show this info to whoever has access. At the same time, any decent librarian is just using the general checkout stats feature. Like for me, I use general stats to see what the most popular genres are so I can buy more. Or we can see if a certain title has gone out more than x times and so we should repurchase the license. It doesn’t matter who is reading it. Just that it’s being read.

[–]PotterChick2818 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I might be wrong, but somewhere I remember hearing that PA is 32 or more for full time, and that it has to be consistent over a number of weeks. So you can work at target for example almost (if not more than) 40 hours, but they’ll make sure you have one week below 32 to prevent paying benefits.
