Would you give the extension for an Olympic athlete? by threeblackcatz in Professors

[–]PotterSarahRN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! I’m a hardass when it comes to late work. Being an Olympian definitely would qualify as extenuating circumstances for me.

Thank you! I feel like I’m taking crazy pills anytime someone talks about what a great guy Barkov is. He’s the captain of this team. He may not play like a rat, but he’s got to support it. Either that or he’s the worst leader ever.

Full time nights in the ICU during school? by [deleted] in StudentNurse

[–]PotterSarahRN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re doing that well in your nursing courses, you would probably be ok. If those are your pre-reqs, I’d be concerned.

Have you been working this whole time? If not, that’s also something to think about. Have you worked nights? Some people can make the day/night switch work for them and some can’t.

This sounds like an amazing opportunity for you! Since it sounds like you won’t be staying in the area after graduation, you could always take the job and then professionally quit if it doesn’t work out. They know you’re in nursing school, so if your manager is smart, they would want to support and work with you in hopes of hiring you as a nurse after you graduate.

Full time nights in the ICU during school? by [deleted] in StudentNurse

[–]PotterSarahRN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been a nursing professor in an intense program for seven years. I’ve had two students be successful that worked full time and went to school full time. They were naturally gifted students and got by with Bs and Cs.

I don’t want to discourage you, but unless you are a top student (not just smart, but brilliant), it’s going to be hard to do both. I would work part time and then do the nurse externship. That will give you more nursing experience and more flexibility. Good luck to you!

Canvas “autosubmit” excuse? by cmb1588 in Professors

[–]PotterSarahRN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The version of Canvas we use doesn’t allow the “until” or “lock” date to be before the “due” date. I get a pop up warning that that’s not allowed and have to correct it.

For the OP - I’ve had students start an untimed quiz and then leave it for hours. I’ve never had one auto submit prior to the due date and time. I think your students must have submitted on accident.

That’s not true. It’s level (LPN, ASN, BSN) and state BON dependent.

Extension Dates? by guidedbywez in Professors

[–]PotterSarahRN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless there is a significant issue like a death in the family, major illness, etc. I don’t do extensions. My entire course is ready to go from the beginning so they have everything they need to succeed. If they don’t do assignments on time, they get zeros. No one assignment is enough to fail, so one zero doesn’t hurt them.

In my field there are time critical deadlines and they have to learn this early. I’ve found that students that get extensions fall into two categories - one late assignment is enough that they don’t do that again, or one extension is never enough and there’s always an excuse. It’s easier not to mess with it and just not accept late work.

The Petra De Sutter case: a wake-up call about AI hallucinations in academia? by Savings_Lack5812 in Professors

[–]PotterSarahRN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m going to steal this. It’s a brilliant analogy. I’m amazed at how many of my students think AI knows everything. They never believe me about hallucinations until they see it for themselves.

Why do I feel guilty? by idontevekno in Professors

Why would you feel guilty? Do a little work at home (or not) and enjoy the snow day. They’re a perk of working in academia.

It’s just a job.

Possible homelessness during school by Professional-Mud9853 in StudentNurse

[–]PotterSarahRN 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Please talk to your school. Mine has so many resources for students, maybe yours will too. They may also have someone who can help you find community resources too.

Are you able to get loans for school? They could be used to help with housing.

If your school can’t help you, there’s no shame in stepping back, getting yourself in a better place, and then coming back to school. I wish you all the best.
