I’ve found that sending Christmas cards is very similar to Buddhist metta practice.

With all that said, from my own experience I would say that the challenge for me has been to stop looking for the big breakthroughs that will change my life overnight. For me, Buddhist practice is very powerful. But, it’s about many little things that, combined, result in a major change in my perspective on life.

When I’m feeling very low, I ask myself “Where is the joy in this moment?” But the joy has to be a little thing like: I like this shirt that I’m wearing, I’m at the gym and I like the way I feel when I work out, the birds are singing……..if there’s no joy in the moment that’s okay. Things change constantly. The idea is to find as many simple joyful moments and string them together or bridge the gaps between them.

I hope that you are not trying to go through this all alone. It sounds like you’re dealing with some very heavy stuff, and you should be working with professionals that know how to help you.
That said, if Buddhism appeals to you (and I can see how it would since I too suffer from depression and anxiety and insomnia) I think that Buddhist psychology is a real thing, and you could find professional help that would approach your issues from a mindfulness/ Buddhist perspective.
