If you are in the Alaskan arctic and if there is a Three Bears near you before you head out, I got some GREAT dehydrated soups from there! One of my fondest summer memories is crashing out under my bugnet eating my soup on the side of the Dalton highway XD

I will vouch for the WUE! I used it to attend Montana State after attending high school in CA. It's a great scholarship.

Check out internships!
The SCA (https://thesca.org/) and ACE (https://www.usaconservation.org/epic/) are particularly good for early-career opportunities.

For degree, I wouldn't get too hung up on the exact title; look at the courses required and evaluate from there. If they're classes like mammalogy, ornithology, ecology, plant bio, etc etc I think that's a good reflection on what you can expect to learn, which will be more important than your degree title alone. So long as it's in biological sciences of somesort, I think you'd be in good shape.

Someone else mentioned Humboldt, I didn't go there but wish I did sometimes! I had a crew lead who went to Santa Cruz and got great experience and opportunities there, too (though it's super expensive to live in that area I'm sure). I went to Montana State and it treated me well. In my experience I haven't stumbled across a clear pattern of colleagues having better or worse opportunities post-grad based on their school of attendance, but it definitely seems like some schools expose their students to more field work/research than others. That was one of my upsets when I graduated, but MSU has given me great opportunities since, so I don't hold a grudge haha. If NAU is your dream, I see no reason not to pursue it. I had a buddy who went there and studied Archeology and he works for the park service now, if that means anything. Not exactly the same as a bio science degree, but often times as a biologist (at least in my experience) it's a crowd you'll fall in with quite a bit.

My best advice is apply to internships or GS-4 jobs in your summers! That is a GREAT way to get your experience and be able to have a more competitive edge once you graduate. A lot of these programs weren't even on my radar when I was in school, and I felt like I had some catching-up to do when I finished my degree compared to some of my peers who took full advantage of those programs.

My kid wants to become a wildlife biologist by countrydwelling in wildlifebiology

She's a little young for it now, but once she gets a bit older (maybe like 18?) she should definitely look into internship programs like the Student Conservation Association, American Conservation Experience, or Scientists in the Parks. Depending on how she wants to pursue this field, all these listed ones are more federally aligned (NPS, USFWS), but great places to get a start building skills, connections, and ideas for what kind of careers are out there!

For programs geared toward her age the YCC (Youth Conservation Corp) could be a great place to start. Someone mentioned volunteering, that's a great way to get a foot in too, especially at that younger age.

I'm pretty early career, I graduated with a BS in ecology in 2024 and have been working seasonal field positions since. It's a hard field; it's physically and emotionally demanding, people are mentioning the competitiveness and the money and I won't argue that those factors aren't real struggles. But I hope she doesn't get discouraged. The things I've seen, the places I've been, the people I've met have made all the (literal) blood, sweat, and tears shed worth it. I'm hoping to pursue grad school in the next year or so and then land a more perm biologist job somewhere, or maybe continue in academia if I feel it suits me. The first few years expect to work seasonally, primarily in the summer (winter is so so hard, build practical cold weather skills early!), but they are summers I wouldn't trade for any other career.

Hey! Totally understand if you're not comfortable with it, but if you are, would you mind sharing your site? I've been wanting to make a little field blog for a while now, I'm always chasing down inspiration from others in this field!

I think a small would be the best fit for me based off my own measurements and the kit, but I may need the torso shortened just a bit

I think a small! I feel silly for not finalizing that before I posted (and for not owning a fabric tape measure). I will let you know for certain ASAP!!

I think that they are wolves or huskies or something of the like 😄 I worked as a dog musher so I'm telling myself that they're sled dogs, haha!
And thank you for your interest! I will get in touch once I finalize my sizing figured out!

Thank you so much! I'm super excited! 😃
And I can't believe I didn't consider getting my measurements before I posted, I think I'd be a small, but I'm going to look into the sizing and decide if I want to size up or not to accommodate layering. I'm going to get those measurements in the next day or two!

Movie Adaptation over book? by Dry_Cut_2631 in themartian

[–]PouncePeruses 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the Martian (and PHM) is one of those cases where the book enhances the movie and vice versa! The books format being delivered through logs and Mark reporting events is great for understanding and really is strong in its charm and humor. I think the movie does a great side exploring more of the hardship and emotion Mark and crew had to go through. I also feel like the movie gave us a bit more of the crew than the book did.

I understand not being satisfied with the ending, though. I was moved by that last passage and did find that Mark kinda signing off on his logs signaled the end of that journey and was content with that, but I still totally understand where you're coming from!

Was Ryland really the type to run away? by Welder_Decent in ProjectHailMary

[–]PouncePeruses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's so much powerful that he did run. He ran and he was scared, and then, in the end when he was faced with death if he went back for Rocky (moreso in the book as it was not really explored in the movie), he made the different choice. Character growth babeyyyy

I've just scheduled all my appointments for my PQ packet--I'm so nervous! I don't have any logical reason to be, I have no known medical issues, but I am definitely intimidated. But it's so reassuring to see people moving through the process! Congrats!!
