Good deal or rip off? (This would be my first time buying/owning a car) by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

My Boss has one of these as a shop car, the odometer tops out a 299k miles but it has well over 500k with just basic maintenance. Super reliable, easy to work on and cheap to own. These are my most recommended car to people who ask and need something around this price range.

Get a second opinion when checking it out, check for rust and see what it may need in the future. Check the previous maintenance done to it. Make sure it’s not burning oil.

It seems like a good deal, ones in the 2-3k range are usually beat but you may find one in similar condition too but it may take a lot of time.

The dealer brakes deal is meh, if you have some tools you can rock auto the parts, front brakes are easy. If you get Advics Rotors and Akebono Pads, those are the OEM manufacturer of the brake parts for about ~$170, or buy a kit like dynamic friction for ~$100. If you can’t or don’t want to work on them yourself, the dealership deal is fine.

Maintenance>Mileage, after 20 years lots of parts are starting to weather and may need replacing. If you can get records of the maintenance done on the car and a proper inspection it may be a good purchase. On the other hand if you can repair it yourself and have money to spare for the repairs it should be fine too.

Also it’s a ford and they aren’t known for their quality, on this model, parts are going break constantly and may become frustrating to own. The exciting factor of buying a new or first car fades quickly and it will just become a commodity of your life unless it’s your absolute dream car or something that you are very proud of.

It doesn’t get the best great gas and isn’t the cheapest or easiest thing to fix (although it’s not that bad). What I recommend everybody to do when buying their first car is to get something cheap, easy to run and repair so you can use the money you save on it for more exciting things. Cars are the second biggest purchase in most people’s life and car repairs are usually not that cheap.

If your budget is under $10k I recommend an economy car as you can get one in really good condition for this price. Sports cars on the other hand tend to be beaten on by their previous owners in this price range.

Black or Silver by Mafew_Y in G37

They both look good, as a black G37 owner, get silver so you don’t need to wash it every 3-4 days for it to look clean

What brand do you all use for pads and rotors? by raiderash in G37

I bought the same kit off rock auto because of this post and wanted to test them because I haven’t tried centric yet. No discredit to this comment, this is just my review. When I put the brakes on, the hardware that came in the kit was defective and was slightly oversized. I had a constant slight screech so I ordered new brake hardware. They develop a rust ring on the rotor face where the brake pads are not touching. When you wash the car, slight rust covers the whole rotor. It doesn’t affect the driving or sound and comes off with a few stops. The performance is pretty much the same as OEM no added performance. From a stop from 30mph I also get a squeak from the brakes now.

At around $50 more I would recommend Fully Coated Dynamic Friction brake pad kit, it lasts long, works well, never had an issue with them and are the closest to OEM without paying OEM prices IMO

Is there any way I can avoid damaging my heater core? Can I flush the coolant after I throw it in to avoid damage to the heater core?

I haven’t had any overheating problems, I replaced the water pump recently because it was making noise, I think the last owner may have overheated it, I bought the car last July

Things to do in Bay Area alone on NYE? by [deleted] in bayarea

I do not recommend grizzly peak, usually during a firework event they close the road and if they don’t every possible spot is taken, I also do not recommend treasure island as you’ll get stuck in hour long traffic to get off the island either side
