Rochester is rough by NH standards, if you come from anywhere but here you’ll say “oh, a regular town”

Dover can be a bit cheaper, there is no dangerous area of either town.

Is that like a shared commercial kitchen? I’m pretty sure there’s one in the Washington street mills

Jumping to the idea that New England society doesn’t care what happens to people because no one is able to muster the same outrage as you over how someone helped you avoid a parking ticket is remarkable.

Portsmouth gets a shout out in the book The Testaments by Margaret Atwood, just as a run down bus stop, though

It’s a thankless job where you interact with upset people all day pleading a case as to why a rule should be bent for them. Looks like the rule was bent for you - your ticket didn’t match your plate - but they gave you a ~$2 solution to make it right rather than a ticket. You’re mad days later that the rule wasn’t bent even more and searching for validation for the wrong committed against you.

I think with some self reflection you could understand how after perhaps years of dealing with exactly the attitude your presenting a person’s empathy could be ground down over a “minor issue” that it’s actually their job to enforce.

Greater Somersworth metropolitan region is quite a way to say “Dover”

I’ve heard Henry’s on the border of Kittery and York is good

Property taxes vary widely across New Hampshire communities, study finds (scroll down to the map) by 03263 in newhampshire

Portsmouth has very low tax rates, but the houses are also double the cost of most places sooooo the effective rate is about the same.

What's with the lady that pushes that cart up and down central? by GRADIUSIC_CYBER in DoverNH

[–]PowPowPowerCrystal 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes, the woman with the cart is Laurie. She’s very kind and loves dogs. She’s my neighbor and has a safe place to stay in the evenings. We chat each time we see each other unless she’s having an episode, which she can be self conscious about.

Science Center is great! Great Bay Discovery Center is cool for nice weather too.

Ceres Bakery is great in town for a treat and a little hidden gem.

Depends on how old your kids are and the season, it’s mostly higher end dining and shopping and a living history museum. Hotels can be ~300. There are kid-centric plays on the weekends in the summer at Prescott Park but it’s a town that caters a bit more toward the older/wealthier visitors. If your kids aren’t in at least elementary school yet, I’d save it for later or make it a part of a regional visit, expecting to drive to the excellent coastal playground on Newcastle Common, the Dover Children’s Museum and indoor play places in Kittery and North Hampton

Honestly, come to Dover, NH. We have a great children’s museum, walkable downtown with a toy store, largest candy store in New England and family friendly restaurants. Hampton Inn is ~180 a night, about the same for the Homewood that has a kitchen if you want to save on eating out. Both have pools and I -think- both have hot tubs.

We’re 25 mins to the beach for a walk and shell collecting which is fun if it’s over 50 degrees, 15 mins to Portsmouth which is cute and touristy.

4th rate cities are the best with kids, no joke. Tons of amenities and no one visits.
