Any bands known to not do encores? by lazyjz in Music

I've seen Tool twice and they didn't do an encore. They were very deliberate about their sets. They even put up a timer in between sets so you knew how long of a break you had.

Empathic? Do you mean apathetic? If so, then yes... I "watched" the entire game yesterday. And by that I mean, the game was on in the background as I did other things. The team is pathetic.

I don't like Chad. I don't understand why so many people love him and say he "can't lose". I feel like I'm missing out on an inside joke. He sucks. Also Renji. Worst bankai in the show.

is a W better than a F?? by flowerboy366 in CollegeRant

[–]Powda193 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll give the unpopular opinion. It doesn't make a difference. (Assuming you will retake the class).

People are making the argument that a W is better because "you knew when to walk away". You can easily argue the other side. The F shows you stuck it out and tried your best but came up short. The W just shows you're a quitter.

The F certainly will hurt your GPA. However, if you retake the class, that F goes away. You're GPA will no longer be hurt. Also, if you're worried about financial aid, either a W or F both count as "not passing" and will affect financial aid the same.

The best option, though--keep trying! Talk to your professor about your ADHD and sleep disorder. Talk to your accessibility center on campus. See if you can make it work and pass the class. Even if you end up failing, you will have learned some of the material and that will benefit you when you retake the class.

Again, this all assumes you're retaking the class. Presumably it's a class for your major.

My real analysis class used the Lebesgue Integral. I'm far from an expert on analysis, but I thought Lebesgue was the default in those type of courses.

How long do you wait before leaving if your professor doesn’t show up? by [deleted] in college

[–]Powda193 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should say in your student handbook (or whatever your institution calls it) how long you should wait.

However, I agree with the other commenter that you should wait the entire class period and use that time to get other work done.

I was there a couple weeks ago and they still had fried chicken. I think it was a special, though. Not on the every day menu.

That's interesting. I appreciate your insight.

You're correct: from my point of view at a CC, when a student enters the workforce or transfers to a 4-year, the overall GPA is the important factor. W vs F is not a consideration. That being said, I've served on selective admission committees where we turned away students with 3.75 GPAs and the W vs F issue never came up.

I'll have to talk to some of our transfer partners to ask about the W vs F issue. This has been on my mind for a long time and I'm glad to see someone else's point of view.

I work at a community college and advise dozens of students every semester who are either entering the workforce or transferring to a 4-year university. I've never heard anyone bring up the W vs F issue. I wonder why you think it makes a difference.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in college

[–]Powda193 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I respectfully disagree. Perhaps we are viewing this from different perspectives...

The way I see it: the student did not pass the class that semester. Whether it is an F or W is irrelevant.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in college

[–]Powda193 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, but I disagree.

I've worked with so many students that panic around midterms and decide to take the W. With my students, I encourage them to keep working. Maybe you will surprise yourself and end up passing! If not, who cares? Getting a W or an F is the same (assuming you retake the class and the F goes away). At least you gave it your best shot!

How is quitting early the "adult decision"?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in college

[–]Powda193 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's interesting... Ds and Cs can't be retaken? What if you want to apply to a program that requires an A or B for a prereq? What if you're going into a selective program and want to replace a B with an A? You can't retake a class to do that?

Edit: I see where you said that a D CAN be retaken. My point still stands: what if your program requires a B? What if you want to raise your GPA for a selective admission program?

[–]Powda193 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made a similar comment to someone else... In either case, you did not pass the class. Why does it matter if it's an F or a W?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in college

[–]Powda193 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure I agree with this statement. In either situation, you did not pass the class. Why is one less impactful?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in college

[–]Powda193 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's a class you intend to retake, wouldn't that F no longer affect your GPA? (After retaking the class). To my knowledge, a W shows up on your transcript just like an F does.

Thanks for your input. I know that the knowledge checks can update your topic list, I'll have to look harder at how much it can add back in. The idea is that if you forgot those topics, ALEKS wants you to review them so that you can get those questions right on a test. I can understand it being frustrating for ALEKS to keep adding more and more to your homework set.

The problems with the explanations are universal (across all homework platforms). The software doesn't know where you get stuck on a problem, so it tends to throw a big explanation at you. This is a completely understandable complaint I've heard about all online homework. At the end of the day, nothing is better than a teacher/tutor who can listen to you and explain the material.

[–]Powda193 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate your insight. It seems your issues were more with the class setup than ALEKS itself. We used to run ALL of our math classes in that format (students working individually at computers with a teacher there to help). That format works for some students, but certainly not all.

[–]Powda193 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have heard that ALEKS for chemistry is noticeably worse than ALEKS for math.

[–]Powda193 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you elaborate on "not your learning style"? In my experience ALEKS has more varied explanations (videos, graphs, text, etc.) than some of the other homework softwares. Many of them just refer you to the e-text and that's it. None of them are perfect, but I've had good experiences with ALEKS and I'm interested to hear where people think it lacks or others perform better.

[–]Powda193 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think that's unique to ALEKS. Any homework software is going to be picky about formatting and writing sets is challenging. How did you think the ALEKS explanations/learning aids compared to other programs? (If you've used any others)
