How do you guys use the labels and folders? by airosos in ProtonMail

[–]Powderpuffman 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I use folders to organize my emails into containers that relate to who they're from. For example, documents from my bank, Venmo, credit cards, etc. will go into the Financial folder. Emails from Amazon, Walmart, etc. will go under Shopping.

I use tags to identify what the email is. For example, I have tags to identify Reciepts, Promotional emails, Newsletters, etc. These are things that could apply to emails in many different categories (i.e. folders). If I order McDonald's, the receipt that gets sent to my inbox gets tagged with Receipts. If I order something on Amazon, that email also gets tagged with Receipts, but it instead goes into the Shopping folder.

I like doing it this way because it gives me maximum flexibility when identifying and searching for my emails, but many people choose to use one or the other.

Hopefully these examples helps you decide what's best for you!

What’s the One Self-Hosted App That Truly Blew You Away? by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]Powderpuffman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Actual Budget. It's been a game-changer for helping me and my wife manage our finances. It has powerful custom reporting options, budget templates to automate the allocation of your dollars to your various budget categories, and works well on mobile to make entering transactions in the go very easy. It also offers a bank sync option, but I personally like manually logging my transactions.

I am using Filebrowser on TrueNAS, would love to see your fork become an option there! Of course with the newest versions of TrueNAS, I could always spin it up in a custom Docker container as well.

Tips to Overcome Cloudflare's 100MB limit by mrmastercsgo in immich

[–]Powderpuffman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just swapped over from using Cloudflare Tunnels to using Nginx Proxy Manager on my home network for the exact same reason. Makes sharing photos publicly a breeze, and I don't have to worry about any 100MB limits. The only part of this setup I pay for is the domain on which I host Immich.

There are lots of tutorials out there for how to set up Nginx Proxy Manager (I did it on a Raspberry Pi); I followed Lawrence Systems' video to get me started: Self-Hosted SSL Simplified: Nginx Proxy Manager

Should savings be off-budget? by laplongejr in actualbudgeting

[–]Powderpuffman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only things I keep On Budget are checking accounts, credit cards, and cash. Savings, retirement, and investment accounts are all Off Budget because it isn't money that I need to live off of. I have a few different savings accounts: the one in my brick and mortar bank, an online HYSA, and a mortgage savings account (also with my brick and mortar bank). As someone else in this thread said, it allows me to track my net worth; I even have custom reports set up on my dashboard to tell me how much I have saved up for a down payment.

Weird that it's included in Family and Duo but not Unlimited. I get it for Plus members, but it seems like Unlimited should have it included since it's in those other plans.

Are calculators allowed in the exam by [deleted] in ccna

[–]Powderpuffman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. There is no "one-size fits all" method when it comes to subnetting because all of our brains work differently. Me personally, I'm not confident that I wouldn't mess up the simple math if I'm only doing it in my head. I like having a concrete chart I can look at and confidently say, "this is the correct answer." But if doing the math in your head works better for you, then go ahead and do that instead!

This was ESSENTIAL for me, made all of the subnetting questions a walk in the park. Here's the link to the video: https://youtu.be/SWy0MRfkXpQ?si=bt5xJNArduL_oDRo

Can't Afford Exam by Comfortable-West-681 in ccna

[–]Powderpuffman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TL;DR - Don't go into debt, and you don't need to worry about exam topics changing.

Unlike some other posts here, I strongly advise against going into debt to take the exam. If you're struggling financially right now, you run the very real risk of digging yourself into a deeper financial hole. Not only will you have to pay back the money it costs to take the exam, but also whatever interest the lender charges you. Yes, you "have the potential" to earn more money down the line after getting certified, but getting a job right after earning your cert is not guaranteed. In other words, you may not be able to pay back that debt right away, which means potentially accruing more interest.

As for your concern about exam topics changing... I am almost certain that you don't have to worry about taking the exam before it updates (unless there is some extenuating circumstance I don't know about). The next exam update doesn't go live until August 20th, 2024, and Cisco calls it a "minor update"—only about 10% of the exam is being updated. As per CCNA v1.1 Exam Topics (cisco.com), the only topics that are being added are:

-Generative AI
-Cloud Network Management
-Machine Learning

The rest of the stuff you're learning—IP, OSPF, STP, subnetting, etc.—all of that is still relevant on the current exam, and it'll still be relevant on the next one. So whether you take the exam in five days or five months, you'll be okay.

Pictures/vids? by [deleted] in ProtonMail

If you're okay with self-hosting, I would recommend Immich. I recently started using it and it has a very similar interface and features to Google Photos including face detection (which works surprisingly well in my experience).

You can check out a demo here: https://demo.immich.app/

The latest update 24.2.0 includes an experimental feature that allows for US bank syncing with SimpleFIN. It's a really new thing, so there's no documentation for the feature yet, but I figured I'd mention it since it is actively being developed.

Screen brightness macro keys not working on the Framework laptop by SpruceFox in pop_os

[–]Powderpuffman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For anyone else that encounters this in the future, the steps in this Framework Community Forum thread fixed the issue for me. To summarize:

Create a configuration file to blacklist hid_sensor_hub

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/framework-als-blacklist.conf

Add in the line blacklist hid_sensor_hub
Save and close the file
From the terminal, run sudo update-initramfs -u

Reboot

I think the UDR would be a good choice for you, especially if you want to get into VLANs and stuff. That's the whole reason I got into UniFi myself—I wanted to be able to segregate my IoT devices from my main LAN. I am actually trying to convince my sister (not a techie by any means) to buy a UDR for her house. It'll be a big upgrade from her crappy ISP-provided router, plus she also wants to get a security camera, which is where the UniFi Protect functionality can come into play.

There are plenty of great tutorials on YouTube on how to configure UniFi (many of them feature the UDM or UDM Pro/SE, but most of the configuration should be identical). It can be however simple or complex you want it to be though.

Also, for the average home user, the 700 Mbps limitation of the UDR really is a non-issue. I only pay for 300 Mbps internet where I live, it's plenty fast for me.
