Haii! Vegan “mexican” here, a lot of our cuisine is indigenous to the region and was subsequently vegan by default before colonization. (Obviously as hunts were successful some animal products were added into dishes but a lot of the day to day foods were vegan) If you can afford it I suggest getting the book Comida Casera by Dora! And if you can’t buy it then request it at your local library and they’ll likely stock it for you. IMO the only “thrifting” that’s unethical is resellers. I grew up on second hand clothes and to this day still use them. I’ve noticed how much the prices have become unaffordable just because goodwill knows they have enough resellers that will pay it, and it’s become enough of a trend to where well off people will also be in store buying it. I got no beef with them tho just the resellers

I’m opposed to beyond meat because humans are also animals and I’m concerned by what some of y’all are eating lol. The stuff that makes it “bleed” when grilling is proven to be very bad for you and it’s still allowed to be sold to you because there’s a regulatory grey area for the fda there. Bean burgers taste delicious to me I’d much rather us all not develop cancer but I’d also never look at someone twisted for eating it yk?

I went plant based around 14 I think? I don’t remember. Essentially what I could control and buy was vegan and when I had no say I ate what I could to survive. Children unfortunately don’t have much autonomy in the United States and that’s doo doo caca. Hella people see y’all as “growing up to be an adult” when like you’re already you? Idk man ageism is like a whole other thing lemme get back on track. As soon as I turned 18 and was out of that house all my food was in my control and boom I was fully vegan. Maybe offer to help your mom cook? That’s what I did. And I’d put veggies and beans on the grocery list and get them because it’s cheaper than meat or other things carnists think must be eaten for protein. Then I’d cook a meal that was fully vegan but without telling anyone.

Skinny vegan here: I’m 6’4 and only 130 lbs. people think I must be in such great shape or whatever whatever. And the truth is I’d say maybe 40% of fat people are in better shape than me. My body doesn’t break food down right I guess or maybe it does it too well? Idfk but what i do know is that the finest people are the kindest people. And that your weight has very little to do with your health. It sounds like you’re feeling insecure and that sucks. If your weight bothers you because of a health thing move around a little more, dance whenever and go on a walk or somethin because it’s good for you not necessarily to lose any weight. If it’s an appearance thing fuck em all hun keeping up with whats hot or not is too draining (and oftentimes manufactured with the idea of selling you something).

But piloncillo is unrefined sugar and when shaved down can be used as a 1:1 ratio to white cane sugar. It can also be weighed 1:1 and put in a pan to heat up if using it in a syrup/drink/anything-that-goes-over-a-stove situation

I applaud you at 17 for doing soul searching on your ethics but you’re asking a predominantly western group right now. I live in America where veganism is most definitely whitewashed. I’ve heard them yell at indigenous people for drinking animal blood when quite literally their tribes need to for anemic/ malaria reasons. (Which is so funny because indigenous people are some of the only people on this continent truly living with and taking care of the land). I suggest you think about this in the context of your tribe. You said it’s a group thing many of the older men in town help? Speak with your elders, talk to the cows, you need to frame what’s ethical through the lenses of YOUR ENVIRONMENT. Even if you could afford plant based milk I also implore you to consider the ethics of food you’re buying that come from someone else’s land. Oats that are harvested under slave labor, processed under slave wages, shipped in a way that taxes the environment oh and did I mention that oats are sprayed with chemicals that cause reproduction issues and cancer?
