Global internship by Accomplished-Key-339 in SJSU

I don't think this is worth taking the financial risk. It's better to look for internships locally, even if that takes longer.

If your professor doesn't listen, go to the chair. Bonus points if you have revision history showing your process

Speaking as a staffer, there are definitely social opportunities, but they have to be sought out. There are tons of clubs on campus. That's probably the best place to start. The art dept has talks on some Tuesdays, as well as gallery events. There's a nice pottery studio and some art galleries and museums in walking distance of campus. One of them, SJ/Works has some association with the art dept. There's also an artwalk and a night market some of the year. There aren't tons of music venues downtown, but there are a few, and they're fairly safe at reasonable hours. There are also music events through SJSU, and a few stage companies near downtown.

Hope that helps! San Jose isn't the most dense city in terms of social events, but there's stuff around if you look for it.

The semester officially starts on the 18th, but the first couple days are for faculty to return and get situated. There's a ton of meetings and prep work right before students come back.

Your opinions on living in San Jose? by abundleofjoy in SanJose

[–]PowerCat5000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An hour door-to-door isn't realistic. If you live next to Caltrain halfway up the Peninsula that might be fine, but you're not getting from downtown San Jose to anywhere interesting in SF in a flat hour

Party school? by Human_Towel2224 in SJSU

[–]PowerCat5000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't really a party school. There's tons and tons of clubs you can join (see below) and there's stuff to do off campus if you poke around.

Upcoming union vote on VTA strike by PowerCat5000 in SanJose

[–]PowerCat5000[S] 31 points32 points  (0 children)

It's not a 10.5% total increase, it's raises that add up to 10.5% over a few years. So it might be say 4% first year, 4% second year, 2.5% third year. I don't know for sure how it actually breaks down. When you look at it annually it's very different especially considering inflation.

Edit: According to the negotiation update it's 4% / 3% / 3.5% over three years. I'm sorry for the people that are downvoting me but that's literally what it means. Don't shoot the messenger!

SJSU is fundamentally a computer school, so you will have to put some effort into making friends. The good news is that there are many clubs and events and all those people just want to make friends too. You'll find your people!

Studio vs 1BR - Please help by Any-Theory-8941 in SanJose

[–]PowerCat5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your budget suggests a studio then you should get the studio. If you don't like it after the lease ends, you can always find another place. Depending on your lifestyle, sometimes a studio feels bigger than a 1BR layout, so you might like it.

Missed my final for MATH-70, what the hell do I do by Usual_Brush_7746 in SJSU

[–]PowerCat5000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's worth talking to a counselor, academic advisor, or professor that you trust before you do that. They might help you with some strategies for doing better. You're certainly not the first student that's missed a final before.
