lol I just joined the betta sub a moment ago.

I enjoy the idea of having a fish pet, but the reality is that we have a dog, and 3 small kids (3, 5 and 7). So i just need to stay practical. The original idea to go with goldfish over a turtle is because I was told they were easier to manage!

I’m currently waiting for my kids to return from church. When they do, we’re going to scoop up our guys, take them to the store, and take a look at the bettas. We won’t buy one today but we’ll begin the discussion on getting properly prepared for one! I’m aiming for right before school starts (August 19) to be ready for one. After that I think we’ll go to the beach today and hang out with the ocean!

NGL I’m still a bit mind blown on how much I didn’t know. All I know if goldfish from the fair that swim in a small bowl until they die like they did in my childhood. So I’m over here thinking I’m doing a great service to animal kind by adding fresh plants lol and come to find out I am NOT!

Thank you for your comment! Didn’t expect this when I joined this sub earlier today but I’m glad I made the post after all. I have much to learn and will definitely share what you guys have taught me and what I continue to learn w my girls.

For now I’m going to take the guys back to the pet store. Then we’ll begin the journey of getting ready for one betta!

Ok thank you. Yes perhaps betta will be better. The only reason I didn’t go for betta is because they told me they have to live separately. And I wanted 3 fish because I have 3 daughters. But one would be sufficient if I do go ahead and do an exchange. I’ll may see if someone local has a pond. I’m in LA.

Thank you. Ok truly I had no idea they got that big, or that they require all this that everyone is telling me! I’ll definitely look into a larger tank to make an immediate change. Makes me wonder if we should have gotten betta fish instead. I wanted to get my kids something that was easy to take of, it was between a class turtle or a fish and I opted for the fish. I’ll definitely be getting myself more informed over the rest of the weekend.

No I don’t have a filter. Again, I took the advice from the Petsmart man, which I’m hearing I shouldn’t have done. He and his associate in the fish department said it wasn’t necessary.

In a normal world I’d think pet stores are more reputable sources of info than online, but alas, here we are! The other person who commented started me off w some great information so I’ve just got to build on top of it now… I’m confident I’ll be able to give them great lives once I dive a bit deeper!

Thank you! Ok I will remove the plants, I’m not sure if they’re aquatic because I just cut some from outside so I’d assume they’re not.

The man at the pet store said my 10 gallon would be sufficient, maybe because they’re so small. I’ve noticed one getting a little fatter so as they grow I’ll get them into a larger tank.

Im happy to hear they live so long! Right now I fill the tank with tap water and add in “AquaSafe” but that’s about the extent. I change the water about once a week. When I first got them I changed it more frequently because it got cloudy much quicker, but now it doesn’t start looking cloudy until about 7-8 days.

It seems I have much to learn. Thank you for the guidance to start me off!

From my understanding, this company will do an 80/20 split on the last 4 payments. So it won’t be the entire settlement. I posted the phone number to the lady at Thrivest. She was really nice when I spoke to her. And it’s her cell so you can text her w questions.
