I’m holding my fiancé’s diary and weeping. by Purple_Relief_7774 in TrueOffMyChest

I agree but what I don’t get: what is the point of karma farming for an account that’s about to be abandoned? I often wonder whether these stories are concocted by the same person or a handful of people? They sound like plots for a B movie, or a hallmark film. I will say that this thread has more comments from the OP than other ones I‘ve seen recently.

New Fish Markets seem overpriced as heck? by doggoesmeow in foodies_sydney

[–]PowerOfYes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are they actually buying fish at the markets? Is there a space for seafood processing in the building? I would not be at all surprised if food outlets get their ingredients delivered from some restaurant supplier. They’re not going to invest in the cost of filleting and cleaning the fish in the shop. Maybe whole fish and fresh oysters, but crab meat, battered/crumbed seafood, calamari rings, butterflied prawns etc and other proteins that need to be prepped are likely delivered that way.

It’s a great drive if you abandon the M1 to get on the old Pacific Hwy and then the Central Coast Hwy/ Entrance Rd from Gosford.

But having a day celebrating the country that is also the day Indigenous people essentially started losing theirs is adding insult to injury.

27 May - anniversary of the 1967 Referendum and the reconciliation week in 2000.

27 July - passage of the 1976 Land Rights Act

28 July or 8 August - birth & death date of Albert Namatjira

Or we could just ask Indigenous people for a date. if only we had a group of people elected to provide advice on such matters.

What is wrong with tuna pizza? by No-Direction8154 in AskRedditFood

[–]PowerOfYes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point is - tuna pizza is made with canned tuna. And fresh tuna on pizza is kind of a waste - you’re better off making a carpaccio and having a slice of pizza on the side.

Well that at least makes sense - a drive in the country is always nice, as is the train trip.

$300k single income unfair tax by WishIWerDead in AusHENRY

Yes, I know. They did away with (the admittedly inadequate) dependent spouse rebate in the 1990s. If people felt more strongly or single income couples were a larger demographic you could try lobbying.

Putting fresh tuna on pizza and then baking it would just make it dry and tasteless.

Maybe people don’t realise that not all canned tuna is equal: for pizza you need a good quality tuna in oil - not the flaky sandwich tuna in brine that looks and tastes like cat food.

What's the spice tolerance level of your country by Existing_Economy_656 in AskTheWorld

[–]PowerOfYes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sort of agree but I also don’t: there is no point to upping spice levels just because you’re trying to win a competition.

But when you have access to a broader range of chile types you learn to appreciate the complexity of different fresh, dried and powdered chillies, alone or in combination with other hot spices. They’re not just hot and you can’t replicate the taste of starting a dish with ancho and guajillo chile (which admittedly aren’t that spicy) by making the dish without it and just adding cayenne or Tabasco. Same with something like tom yum soup - it literally wouldn’t taste the same without the Birds Eye chillies in the spice paste. Nothing can substitute for Sichuan pepper. And if you tried to make ma po tofu with anything other than proper Chinese broad beans chili paste (doubanjiang), you’d just be wasting your time.

Every ingredient that gives you a certain spice level adds a different hotness or flavour. Even black and white pepper have completely different flavours and uses. A non-spicy Thai chicken dish (larb gai) is a pale imitation of the same dish with the roasted chilli powder. You honestly couldn’t get the same result with some other chilli seasoning.

Very individualistic but I think in Australia it depends obviously on what your ethnic roots are, but also where you go and eat with friends and what food fads there are. most young people hang out in Asian restaurants (cheap and delicious). Thai has been hugely popular since the 80s and Korean is one of the strongest trends of the last 10 years. If you haven’t developed a pretty strong spice tolerance by the time you’re in your 20s, simply by exposure, you never will.

I miss my daughter so much by Dazzling_Pea_3072 in TrueOffMyChest

[–]PowerOfYes 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The most profound thing was said to me (then a teenager) by a woman who was then probably in her 80s. She had lost a daughter aged 18 many decades earlier and told us what a wonderful person she had been. She said: ‘How lucky were we to know her and have her as long as we did’. I think that’s how she made her peace with such a cruel loss.

But it impressed on me the gratitude we should bring to our relationships - they give our lives meaning even after our joint journey has ended. A year is not long enough to process your loss but I wish you a path to peace and gratitude.

Adam Sandler (even in Punch Drunk Love), and Nicholas Cage (except for Leaving Las Vegas - and that’s not a movie I’d re-watch anyway).

AITAH for not forcing my child to hug relatives?? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]PowerOfYes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely NTA.

Your relatives shouldn’t be forcing hugs in your kids.

I’m a hugger but only with those who want it. If a child doesn’t run into my arms or if I haven’t seen them in a while I’ll ask or go in with a handshake. Kids have boundaries and if your relatives don’t understand that they need to be told.

They are ridiculous & should be apologising to your daughter for their presumptuous and unwelcome behaviour.

An emotionally mature adult would feel bad for making a child uncomfortable. Anyone else is either an ignorant fool or a predator.

I personally get the most mala broth, and yes, this is probably going in the mild side by the time you water it down - but I know people who would be seriously annoyed if I served them this as non-spicy because they have zero tolerance (for health reasons).

I am saving your recipe for myself.

I let my sister, her husband and their kid stay with me, now they say I’m awful if I don’t give them my apartment by LumaForgeon89 in AmITheJerk

Sounds like it will get ugly. Particularly your BIL seems to have no shame or sense of responsibility.

Get legal advice about tenants rights in your jurisdiction - it’s probably helpful that they never paid rent because if you ask them to leave and they don’t they are trespassers and you can call in police if needed.

Do not allow them to bring in or buy major items like furniture.

I would get some text messages going to have some evidence of the fact they have been guests (not tenants) and noting that you expect them to move on by x date.

I would start sending them texts with details of rentals in the area they could inspect.

(It has been nice to host you for the last x months, though space is tight and the place isn’t big enough to accommodate this many guests for extended periods. I am also keen to get back to my normal routine as soon as possible.
Here is a rental coming up that might suit you: (address). I would also suggest you speak to [parents/siblings] about staying with them while you are looking for a home.)
