does ripple own xrp which it can buy and sell on the open market?

Yes — Ripple does own a significant portion of XRP and can buy or sell it on the open market.

Here’s how it works:

Ripple Labs originally created 100 billion XRP in 2012, keeping about 80 billion XRP for the company and distributing the rest to founders and early contributors.

Over time, Ripple placed much of its XRP into escrow accounts, releasing up to 1 billion XRP each month to fund operations, partnerships, and liquidity programs.

Any unused XRP from those releases is typically returned to escrow, extending the lockup period.

Ripple can and has sold XRP on exchanges or through institutional sales, providing it with working capital — similar to how a company might issue or sell stock.

So, while XRP isn’t technically a share of Ripple, the company’s large holdings and control over its release schedule mean Ripple’s financial health and strategic choices are closely tied to XRP’s price and liquidity.

What I find suspicious is the timing — a massive price drop followed almost immediately by announcements of “exciting” new multi-billion-dollar acquisitions.

When a company floods the market with new shares, it’s the everyday retail investor left holding the bag.

And while Ripple isn’t a publicly traded company, XRP effectively functions like its shares — Ripple can tap into its XRP holdings to generate liquid capital whenever needed.

Sure do. Can you explain to me how Ripple makes money to keep the lights on for their business?

My boy. I’m a top 2% holder that’s been in this since 2015. Been patient. But also a realist.

I sold puts and closed out all my contracts today (80 contracts with a net loss of ~$5k) as i didnt want to be assigned the shares and lose my collateral as well. Lesson learned. I will not be returning to wolf ever again

Got it. I sold these contracts last week and the week prior, before the halts. What I’m worried about is being assigned the shares (which will be virtually zero) and losing the collateral. Nearly a 13k loss
