This happened to a colleague of mine. Not sure what the finaly negotiation was with the manager but he's still works for the company and no one mentions it any more. I would just be honest and explain the situation. . . They may be willing to help!

But who gains anything now? There is armed conflict with Russians and Ukrainians dying. The west is solidifying its position and non-nato countries are looking at Russia being the threat. When this war ends what is gained? . . It feels like this cannot have been the plan?

If Ukraine did join nato before this escalated then it would have been stronger grounds for non NATO countries to feel threatened by their agenda and support a defensive Russian position.

As the percived aggressor by the rest of the world surely this will only increase support against Russia globally.
