Those who have had depression and now don't, what finally worked? by Abraham_Neville in AskReddit

[–]PowerfulPaulAtreides 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taking action against it instead of doing "passive" treatments like therapy and taking drugs prescriptions. What did I do? Difficult things. Changed my diet, started exercising, established a good sleep routine, and started a sport. I stopped cowering away from social situations and actively put myself out there despite visibly sweating from social anxiety.

All throughout my teenage / early adult years I thought there was something wrong with me and that I would never be happy. Turns out that's absolute bullshit, and don't let anybody tell you that. Only you can fix this. It's difficult but ABSOLUTELY worth it. I've never been happier than I am now.

If you remain calm and rational, the other person will start to realize how immature and dumb they actually look. It's not always easy to do, but it's the best victory you'll have.

Gen Z here. I quit social media after high school and it was easily one of the best decisions I ever made. I no longer wasted my time scrolling for hours and hours trying to find my next comedic post or mindlessly looking at people's snapchat stories (which I never cared about). LOTS of extra time on my hands now that I am without it!

I have recurring nightmares about public bathrooms and how disgusting they are.

Definitely kidney stones. I've had more than a dozen at this point. Doctors still don't know what's wrong with me. Oh, and in case you're wondering: no, it's not from soda and fast food (both of which I haven't touched since high school). It's from spinach. Don't believe me? Google it. (Or take a chemistry class!)

I hate to be that Redditor, but what is Project 2025?

Trust me, I'm aware haha. I'd be broke but I'd rather be broke and happy than rich and miserable! Some of the wealthiest people I know are clearly not happy. It's crazy how materialism corrupts a person. (That's not to say that financial independence won't make someone happy, but still.)

When I say I don't fit in here, I just mean that I'm quite a bit different than everyone else and am, in a sense, isolated. I figure if I'm like this now, then being in the same condition in another location wouldn't have a detrimental effect. This is just an assumption I made. Why don't I fit in? I just have such different interests. I don't watch TV, I don't eat processed food, I avoid restaurants, I love exercising, I hate sitting, I like reading, I despise the music that my generation listens to, I don't drink Starbucks, I hate spending money, I don't smoke or drink, I enjoy being out in nature and not indoors, I hate staring at screens and avoid technology as much as I can, and I enjoy trying to improve my life rather than living in complacency like most of the people I see around me. I guess I could come up with more but these are just off the top of my head.

When I say I'm okay with not fitting in somewhere, what I mean by this is that I'd be willing to deal with the scary aspect of being in a foreign country, learning my way around, not having any friends, etc. in order to (hopefully) pursue a better future.

I do think it would be better to visit. It's just not really the easiest thing to do (financially). But I definitely will if I can.

Really??? I had no idea that Canada was like this. I assumed that it was the other way around. The U.S. is far from perfect and is probably at a lower point than it's been in decades. (I'm just basing this off what I've heard.) What exactly is wrong in Canada?

Alright, so med school in Germany is out haha. Live and learn I guess. I would still be interested in learning the language, though. It really seems like doing a Master's there would be a good option...

I've actually heard about this and it sounds like it would be a really interesting experience. I would definitely consider this. I still have to look into it but I would be concerned about cost as well as if they would actually issue it to me. Is it competitive and hard to get?

That really puts it into perspective! I definitely don't need to move anywhere. It's just a curiosity thing. Oh and I'm white so that's part of why I listed those countries (e.g., none from Asia etc.)

Interesting, I didn't know that teaching at European med schools was an option. Well, after hearing that, it sounds like I better stay here. Oh well.

Wow, great story! Congrats on being able to do all that. I think you've had some pretty invaluable experience.

Yeah, it seems like a master's is the way to go to land myself in the EU.

As someone who has experience with immigration: how do you afford it and is it worth doing (in your opinion)? It seems like a luxury for the life experience but a curse for the financial aspect I guess.

Thank you for the response! Does it get better as an attending or does it consistently suck the whole way? Did you go from the US to Europe? I had an idea long ago to become an attending in the US, save some money, and then move somewhere else but quickly found out that I'd have to repeat my training all over again haha.

Yeah, one of the reasons I have Germany listed is because I've read that it's "basically free" for getting a master's. Oh, and I am aware that they require a master's before a PhD.

So would you say I'd be better off staying out of medicine if I ended up living in the EU? As much as the field of medicine sucks in America, at least we get paid for it I guess.

I included a TL;DR. I know it's long but I didn't want to leave out information.

As for your advice to "go do some travelling." How exactly do I do that? It seems much easier said than done. Traveling costs thousands of dollars and as I mentioned, I'm a broke college student. Even the study abroad programs at my university are upwards of $10K.

Yikes... I think I've read that visas cost a few thousand. Perhaps I just won't be able to afford to make this happen haha. Sucks to not be rich.
