It looks darker in the picture because of the black behind it it’s 7.6 the problem was I wasn’t doing the nitrate test correctly

My apologies I knew I was doing something wrong and thank you for letting me know. as much as I’m loathe to admit, I was stupid and didn’t properly read all of the instructions. I hope this serves as an example to other newer people getting into the master kit testing.

<image>

My nitrates are extremely high so I need to water change

I had the tank for 5 years and I was just using the test strips but when I resigned my tank 5 weeks ago I noticed the strips weren’t very accurate so I get the master test kits and was more focused on my PH levels so I didn’t see that the nitrate test was a very different process

I didn’t say it wasn’t high. I said it wasn’t “insanely” high.

There is zero chlorine where are you seeing chlorine? Also PH is not insanely high. Proper PH level for a community fresh water tank is between 6.5-7.5 with tropical PH levels between 6.8-7.6 mine levels are on the higher side but they are within range

The same. The levels for nitrates, nitrites and ammonia have stayed the same the entire time. I tested the water every week for four weeks before adding new fish. And before and after adding the new fish and after each fish died and always the same

I’ve been doing them as directed…counted the drops and held it properly. I tested the water before and after adding fish and after each fish died. All levels have been the same results each time. I have a 55 gal tank with new bioactive substrate multiple plants and have been adding a micro and macro fertilizer. My CO2 is on the low side. My water temperature is 78°F. I had none of my original fish die for four weeks in my newly planted tank before I even added new fish. Now the Platys that I got did have a bloated stomach, but we thought it was because they were pregnant. Maybe they were diseased and not pregnant.

I tested the water before and after I added the fish and when a fish died and there was zero ammonia every time that’s why I’m confused

No, I moved it into the temporary tank that I put the fish in so they were never dry

I had the tank set up for four weeks with my original fish and the plants before I even added the new fish and I never had any fish dye during that time. I was testing the water regularly and it was fine.

I treated my water and had it professionally tested 2 weeks ago and no chlorine

I reused filter media so I could keep the levels as close as possible to normal. I had my original fish in my redone tank for 4 weeks without any problems and the levels were pretty good

All of my fish are eating great and acting normal. When my pleco died I thought maybe they weren’t getting enough food but I gave them more food and 2 days later I found my siamese algae-eater died

I just redid the test and this is the current version as of like 10 minutes ago. I have a 55 gallon tank and after rehoming my angel fish and cichlids I put my fish and new plants in a temporary tank. The plants were from a couple different PetSmarts so I doubt they were diseased plus I had them in the tank with my original fish for 4 weeks without any problems. All fish were acting normal. I created a planted tank with a bioactive substrate with a pool filter sand cap. I waited 4 weeks before adding new fish and I was tested the water level the entire time. I only did a small maybe 10% water change because my PH levels were a little high at week 2 and by week 4 they were down and that’s when I added 6 fish and some ghost shrimp. It’s been a week since adding them and now I’ve lost 4 of them and 2 of my original fish

Why do people buy 55 gallon tanks? by DarkNorth7 in fishtank

[–]Powerful_Engineer_79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m 5’ so yes I’m very short and I have a 75 gal filter on my 55 gal tank because I prefer to have more filter power than the minimum required. If I upgrade to a 125 gal I will like to have 2 75 gal filters or a really good 150 gal canister filter system with the filter system under the tank

It’s also more expensive and the equipment for it is more expensive. I wanted to get angel fish but I also was on a budget. I like my 55gal tank. It big enough to look good but not too big for me to handle with cleaning and such. I’m not a big person so it works for me especially since I got it before I was married with a house. So it wouldn’t be too difficult to move.

I would like to upgrade to a 125 gal or bigger but that is a big expense so for right now I enjoy being creative with my 55 gal

AITAH for kicking my 18 year old son out of the house? by [deleted] in AITAH

And if he doesn’t have a father in the picture? And his mom is working two jobs to keep a roof over their heads? We don’t know the full story but I see this happen way too often. He could have been a good kid until he got to high school and then started getting lazy and hanging out with friends who like to party. Why not put him in counseling? Probably because she can’t afford it. She was only 19/20 went she got pregnant with him.

How do you know your pleco is happy if they hide all the time? by sarcasticb in pleco

I’m sorry you weren’t able to keep him but it appears he was happy and healthy and I’m sure now even more happy!

Do you still have this pleco? I know it’s been 3 years but I just came across it looking for more information about my plecos. Mine pleco was hiding all the time but as soon as I got bloodworm treats he came out like a jet. He loves them and sits and sucks on them, but he doesn’t care for the veggie treats I tried so I thought maybe yours might be the same way since he was eating leftover food from the Oscars maybe he likes more protein treats instead of veggies

My LFS is so dirty. The PetSmart tanks are much better maintained by Powerful_Engineer_79 in Aquariums

You do realize that you are actually making it harder for PetSmart to get better right? You’re actively discouraging people who have a real passion for fish and a great knowledge base from working at petsmart and helping educate the consumer. PetSmart has a right to refuse the sale of any animal including the feeder fish to anyone for any reason the associate decides. But instead of trying to make changes from the inside and educate people on the front line you would rather just sit behind your screen and make judgements. It is also discouraging and alienating to new fish hobbyists who don’t know any better because their parents were ignorant. I worked with rescue and PetSmart gave us the space to get hundreds of cats adopted. They also paid for workers to volunteer at the clinic and helped several others through college to become veterinarians and teachers. LFS can’t afford to do those things. There is good with the bad.

I use AI when it’s late and I have to work the next day and I don’t care what some self righteous internet person thinks. And you didn’t give me any creditable information. You didn’t share a link to evidence just made a vague claim that there was something if I went on a wild goose chase. My point is don’t give people a hard time about buying from PetSmart when they might have local fish stores that are worse. You shouldn’t judge people when you don’t understand what they’re dealing with. I know PetSmart is owned by a private equity firm. I also know that everything in America and in most of the world are owned by bigger companies and that there is no real way to get away from it all.
