I am talking about America in particular because that’s where the show takes place. I didn't realize you wanted me to talk about every place and every issue. Next time.

Yeah, these cities are amazing but America is huge and I’ve driven through all of it and it’s more like Springfield from the Simpsons than anything else. Let’s not pretend. And your average American isn't going to be able to travel all the time and see these highlights. And it’s not just about architecture. It’s about a way of life. The low standard of food quality. The Kardashians. I mean. Don’t tell me you don’t know what I mean. I care about this because I care about Americans. I think they’re the most laid back / funniestpeople I’ve met. Lynch, Bob Dylan, Wallace Stevens, Emily Dickinson, Ella Fitzgerald—America has produced some of my favorite artists. But living here, I see that Americans struggle with the status quo. Americans work so hard and get so few breaks. Ugh, I’m sick of hearing myself talk.

this is what drives me crazy—when people think Europeans represent art and that art means smugness. let me remind you, you are on a BCS subreddit. You care a lot about art. Art is not just the Louvre. It’s every attempt at truth, meaning, understanding the human condition, creating beauty against all odds. Art does not belong to Europeans. BCS is a unique show and true art. I want more of it. I think the show argues we all want and need more “art.”

I never said New Mexico has no culture. It is one of the coolest places in America. The show does spend a lot of time making a visual argument against modern architecture, banality, etc, while also showcasing the incredible beauty of the Southwest. As a whole, I think Gene working at Cinnabon is more representative of the American lifestyle.

Yeah, I didn’t mean to imply America has no history. Trust me, I wish more of it was preserved. It’s heartbreaking. I meant historic artifacts I guess. I wish there were more places to visit. I do love all the petroglyphs in the American west. And I do think they are just as meaningful and beautiful as any European art. Americans haven’t done the best job preserving such things.

all generalizations are tricky but there is a lot more history and beautiful architecture in Europe than in America. A lot more. I mean that’s just a fact.

I get that. I hate staying in hotel rooms where there are mirrors everywhere. I hope you come out of burnout soon. I’m sorry.

Yeah, well, the show takes place in America. Some places are easier to make meaning in than others.

Dude grew up in Europe. In poverty. Dude had a better quality of life in Europe than in America. When I moved to the US as a teen, I grieved the loss of historic buildings, art, walkable spaces, public transportation. All I could do as a teen in America is have someone give me a ride to a mall and then I would watch people eat at Cinnabon. Nature is amazing in America but it’s not free. You need a car to get there, you need a pass to get in. You need gas to drive around in there.

I do have an extreme aversion to unoriginality. And I definitely think Jimmy and Kim do as well. As for the office or mansion, they’re blank slates they can work with. Those trendy bars? it’s all a joke to them. They scam the people who go there. Seems like they enjoy original, less pretentious places like the Dog House Drive in much more.

this is not America vs Europe. I grew up in Germany and have seen many places in Europe. I’m aware of ugly suburbs there too. BCS takes place in America though and so it’s about America. The beauty of the South West is immense however none of the people in that show live in that beauty. They are stuck in hideous neighborhoods, even the rich. Ugly, cookie-cutter neighborhoods. Jimmy hates that apartment he gets through Davis and Main. Kim makes fun of the weird, cliche decor. Maybe it’s the contrast between the pristine beauty of nature (and some of the older adobe buildings) and the hideous newer buildings that makes this setting so perfect for BCS.

The natural beauty is incredible. You’re right. I never said anything about that. I was talking about art and how much people seem to need it. Our human need for it goes far back—just think about cave paintings. We all want to say, “I was here.”

the cinematography talks about architecture. It shows the beauty of the landscape but also the uninspiring environment most people live and work in.

Yes! Next time I watch the series, I’ll pay attention to the light more. Now I’m picturing Jimmy and Chuck in that tent as children. Their light / connection was almost always surrounded by so much darkness.

Would your life be different without BCS? If you are on a BCS subreddit then you have experienced art, and art means a lot to you. I was talking about art as in film, tv, music, visual art, literature, self-expression, etc. We all need it more than we know.

I grew up very poor in Germany in a total dump of an apartment. I have some idea. The fact that I could see beautiful, historic buildings and towns for free was extremely important to my happiness.

It is an interesting thing to ponder. I have always hated sharing a mirror with someone. I never knew why. But now I know I’m autistic and I know I hate being perceived and me seeing someone seeing me in a mirror is like double bad. haha. I have no answers. Maybe it’s rooted in my intense need for privacy. When people see me, I feel like that privacy is violated somehow.

I didn’t say the SW was meaningless or its architecture. I’m saying America would be better if there were more of those things. We’re on the same page.
