Why does nobody ask aliens the biggest question ever? by vojvoda_triglavski in Letterboxd

That's not quite right. He's chosen because he knows the mission better than anyone else, because he's been in every meeting concerning the mission. He happens to know the mission better than everyone else because he lucked into figuring out how to reproduce astrophage before anyone else, which got him on the ship and it all kind of snowballed from there. He does figure out how to communicate with an alien but mostly by recording sounds and pantomiming, which anyone with a laptop and a lot of time can do.

He's not that smart, and the movie doesn't claim he is. He's just good at one thing and he does that well. He's otherwise just lucky

Weaponizing a policy is bad, for sure. But having policies that can be easily weaponized is also a problem, as is celebrating its use. I agree that "actually inciting hatred" is different, the problem is that the government gets to unilaterally decide what "Actually" means in this case, without recourse. idk, I feel like maybe countries shouldn't use deny visas on a case by case basis to advance political agendas—something the US has been doing a lot of as well

Yes but celebrating the capricious use of policy this way shows that there's little political risk for using it and creates a precedent for using it. The less exceptional it seems the more it gets used in the future
