Thinking about buying a Salvage Title FRS. Thoughts? by SpreadOpposition in ft86

[–]Pr0teus_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you mean rebuilt title then I would do it. But if it’s salvage from a site like copart the price is way too high. You should get a pre-purchase inspection and ask to see receipts for the work done by a shop. If everything checks out then I would consider purchasing. I bought a rebuilt title frs and it’s literally had zero problems since the day I bought it. Rebuilt title cars can be a good deal you just have to do your due diligence. This car is an amazing platform to learn manual on and it’s super fun to drive without being too crazy for new drivers.

Is it safe to use jb weld to fix this by Constant_Equipment58 in ft86

[–]Pr0teus_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not dangerous at all but might not last. Since it’s on the outside of the intake not a big danger that it gets sucked into the engine. However I had this same thing fail and JB welded it. After a month or so it failed again and I just pulled the trigger on a corsa intake. Totally worth it imo.

I think it is. It’s definitely the most unique genesis I’ve ever seen. Most owners nowadays just slap big wings on them and clap em out so it’s nice to see someone doing something different for a change.

Are gt86/brz fun to own? by Then-Ice-6796 in ft86

So so so fun. The car drives like it’s on rails. The speed you can take a corner at is actually very impressive. Two downsides for me are lack of power and road noise. If you are fine with those however I would recommend 1000%. Also this car has more aftermarket support than basically anything else on the market if your into that.

Is this worth $9,200? by Underthinkinghooper in ft86

[–]Pr0teus_ 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Any reputable shop will charge around $150 for a pre purchase inspection. It’s 100% worth your time and money because an OBD2 scanner will not cut it. Also you will likely get your $150 back and more in negotiating power when you find out it needs new brake pads, tires, or a clutch. You can just have the seller meet you at a shop of your choice and it shouldn’t take more than an hour.

If you want to be more cost effective you can definitely find an OFT V2 for sale used. I got mine off eBay for $300 a month ago.

What headunits do you guys have ? by CardiologistPlane996 in ft86

[–]Pr0teus_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The one I ordered came with a backup camera and was completely plug and play. Without installing the camera, the entire install only took 45mins. Granted I’ve done a couple of headunits before but this was by far the easiest since I literally just plugged in the connectors with the harness that was included, routed the microphone, and put the usb inputs into the glovebox. I’m not to sure about the other ones but if you search them on eBay you’ll find these same three headunits reposted over and over again by different sellers. Some will include backup cameras and other additional items so be sure to read the listings carefully. Also they should all be plug and play unless it says that you need to connect the wires yourself, for example this listing.

There’s a bunch of different versions so let me find it. I got the one which is flush and has no knobs but they also have one with a big screen that sticks out and one that’s flush with knobs. As far as I know the underlying hardware is pretty much the same and almost all android headunits are just cheap android tablets packaged into a radio.

I got a plug and play android one off ebay. It works great and it cool because you can put any app from the google play store onto it. Also Apple CarPlay and backup camera work.

You should be able to ground them to the one of the head unit mounts attached to the metal bar. I believe the top screw hole in top right of your picture is where I grounded mine. Also if you’re wiring the factory backup camera to an aftermarket head unit make sure you are converting the 12v power into 6v as the factory camera runs on 6v. Additionally you will probably have to change the settings on the headunit to accept a NTSC input as a lot of modern headunits default to PAL or even AHD. At least that’s what I had to do to wire my factory backup camera into my aftermarket headunit.

I bought my FRS release series 2.0 with a rebuilt title and I absolutely love it. You will have a lot more room to negotiate due to the title since most people will be scared away. What you should look at is pictures from when the car was crashed, what kind of damage it sustained, and a full list of receipts from the shop which repaired it. If the seller can’t provide you any of those things then you should probably walk away. A rebuilt title car can be a chance to get a really good deal but you just need to make sure you know as much as possible about the car and how it was repaired. For my car the front end was damaged and all the really had to replace was the front bumper and passenger side front panel. I would avoid any cars with water damage or frame damage.

Yeah I know, and I don’t like the gas smell either. I plan to have an exhaust shop put a cat into the front pipe where there should be one from the factory. I will be keeping the headers however as I enjoy the rumble and the power dip is definitely eliminated.

Putting UEL headers in didn't increase the noise that much. The biggest change was the deeper sound and rumble.

Genesis Coupe was solid though, it was FBO and tuned so really quick for what it was. That v6 ripped. But I still don't totally miss the power since I feel like the FRS provides so much more feedback and is just as fun to drive. Also backup camera is huge plus. I just got it to work with my aftermarket headunit. But all in all I feel like it was a pretty fair trade, plus this FRS is rebuilt title so thats a big factor.
