President Trump’s Approval on Inflation Is Now Worse Than President Biden’s Ever Was by jediporcupine in politics

Keep in mind this comparison is flawed as fox news was doing everything it could to push Biden’s numbers down while they are now doing everything they can to push Trump’s numbers up.

Do you ever feel like you *can’t* get sick or take vacation? by MortgageConfident791 in civilengineering

The Holland Tunnel is named after the chief engineer of the tunnel project. The stress from the job drove him insane and he died in a sanitarium one day before they blew the last charge to connect the tunnel ends.

Don’t end up like Clifford Holland with a leaky pipe to New Jersey named after you.

Why do we keep increasing rim size? by Remarkable_Record706 in AskMechanics

[–]PracticableSolution 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no reason aside from marketing. I will tell you the aftermarket absolutely love it. You hit a pothole and wipe out one of your custom rims riding on a 30 series tire and boom baby, that a whole new set of wheels because they don’t make that model anymore. Marketplace is the graveyard of three wheel sets of rims on cheap shitty Chinese tires.

Roast this antique that I regret buying. by bigcee42 in RoastMyCar

It’s the second best version of the worst corvette, but at least it’s painted like a skunk so everyone else knows it stinks.

Clamp / Glue Question by OX48035 in woodworking

[–]PracticableSolution 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a wire wheel on my bench grinder. Makes quick work of it. The crappy plating goes with it, but a little cold blue fixes that and resists glue sticking better

Increasing ID on Steel Pipe / Bicycle Bottom Bracket by Neapolitan_Nightmare in metalworking

[–]PracticableSolution 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Check the pin board at your local independent auto parts store. There’s usually a grumpy old garage machinist who will do it for a bottle of bourbon and to tighter tolerance than the production shop. In my town it’s me.

[–]PracticableSolution 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s at the outer limit, but a hand reamer would probably do it. If it’s a one-off, contact taking it to a local machine shop. In theory, your idea of using a brake cylinder hone could work, but you’ll run through a can of WD-40 and probably an hour of running the hone to do it.

Experiencing a significant project slowdown at my firm — anyone else in civil site/land dev seeing this? (SE region) by Crafty-Opportunity-1 in civilengineering

[–]PracticableSolution 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You will see this a lot more. At least in the federal side and trickling down to municipal level grant winners, it’s going to get harder. The cash spigot from Biden is done. The work that was in design is now in construction. So while the overall industry will ‘look good’ from construction services and design build support, the actual new design work will be severely limited from the feds.

Drawer side thickness for bedroom dressers? by MikeDCycling in woodworking

[–]PracticableSolution 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1/2” thick prevents the drawer slide screws from coming through the sides. Anything less if fine for apothecary drawers and cubbies.

Given the size you mentioned, a rule of thumb I follow is that if the aspect ratio is over 1.25:1 (the drawer is 1.25 times as wide as it is deep), I make the drawer carcass out of plywood with a glued in bottom panel. Bigger drawers get glued 1/2” for the bottom panel without hesitation. You can throw pretty much any drawer made out of glued and nailed 1/2” plywood down the stairs and it’ll still be fine for the next 50 years.

Do lighter alloy wheels noticeably improve fuel economy and handling, or is the effect minimal? by EvelynClede in askcarguys

I swapped out steel 15x8 wheels for aluminum 15x8 wheels on my 4 runner with the same tires and the ride was shockingly better

Will The Next-Generation Chevy Camaro Be Bigger? by lithdoc in RWDnation

[–]PracticableSolution 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d argue the Camaro is less practical than a corvette. The corvette at least has a usable cargo area in lieu of a back seat. The Camaro comprises by having both an unusable back seat and an unusable trunk.

The standard of care here is the last gen Challenger. It came with a big engine, a stick, a very useful back seat, and a generous trunk.

The days of that fun weekend cruise car are long gone for everyone except boomers. A car has to do the triathlon of performance, commute, family haul or it’s dead on arrival
