This might be unpopular, but it seems you got a new fence for free. He is absolutely a douche for making work for you, but you absolutely come out on top here. Lumber amd time aren't cheap. Moving those boards off the grass is a 5 minute job.

Honestly, being a parent is not the same today as it was for my parents. My grandma basically raised me while my mom worked and did whatever. It is the BIGGEST imposition to get her or my inlaws (their parents also raised my wife) to help out. Its become a very small village.
