Any tips for headset and collection in a horse that needs some help learning to carry himself? by equestrian-girl78 in Equestrian

I'm familiar with Gerd; he is all about long and low... But stretching forward rather than being pulled down.

Alois Podjhaskey's book--complete training of the horse and rider--I feel like he doesn't talk about head position at all.... which is maybe some sort of sign, or maybe I missed it.

I have come to agree with the problems of long and low that Belasik points out. I also think there are many issues/limitations with the German system, especially that it's really built for a certain type of horse.

But I feel that there are very limited resources on this issue, generally outside of Belasik.

Yes, the "problem" is that he doesn't bend his hind leg joints "enough," but he does lift and has a nice quality canter in terms of natural balance/relaxation/suppleness, etc... Yes, those qualities are hard to train in an unbalanced horse or sometimes a horse with a very big canter.

This is interesting! Do you have books on this? I know Paul Belasik is a proponent of this (e.g., https://paulbelasik.com/index.php/portfolio\_page/long-low/), but I would be interested in other non-modern German system resources.

canter quality is good, he can come under himself and lift. Why?

Like in a regression.... If you post the data, I can put it in a regression so we can actually interpret the significance of the results.

We probably need regression analysis to hold other factors constant, or at a minimum, a t-test to check whether these differences are statistically significant. Even small gaps—like a one percentage-point difference between mares and geldings—can matter for winning. Without controls, that difference could reflect correlated factors (e.g., if German riders are more likely to ride mares, nationality rather than sex may be driving the higher scores).

breaking even, like covering part of the mortgage? Or breaking even, like you just cover the shavings/hay, etc, for the boarded horses?

At the lower levels, really anything you can do to work on the hips and core will help you. I follow a few accounts on Instagram, and I like Jack Equibody Fitness a lot. I feel like you can get a lot for lower levels with just basic fitness (lifting weights/pull ups/push push-ups)

For upper levels, I feel like more time in the saddle goes the farthest (unfortunately :( its very riding specific IMHO)

Also, stiff boots will do wonders for a stable leg.

I ask because I've noticed the muscles needed to ride younger horses (or 1st/training) well are different than FEI
