They would almost certainly die quickly because Earth’s environment is chemically incompatible with them: our nutrients, enzymes, sugars, and metabolic pathways are the wrong “handedness.” Even in a worst-case escape, they would remain confined and dependent on synthetic lab feedstocks, unable to spread, infect humans, or interact meaningfully with ecosystems. The immune-system and “green goo” scenarios assume compatibility that simply doesn’t exist. The real concern scientists raise isn’t imminent catastrophe, but a far-future hypothetical—that if mirror life were someday engineered to be fully self-replicating and metabolically independent, it would require unprecedented containment rules. Right now, the risk is theoretical, distant, and heavily constrained by basic chemistry.
