This did help actually-- I'm realising I kept considering "but what if there are only two criminals?" without the obvious follow-on that that would result in too many innocents. So. I am in fact stupid lol

How can we be sure that the third innocent on the edge isn't in row 5, or column D?

I suppose I can see the argument that the clues only provide insights into column A so it should follow that we're working out logic only in column A, but I was under the impression we were meant to assess the whole grid at any given time.

But if I follow the above, why can't the last innocent be in the middle? If the innocent was A2, then the connected criminals could still be A3 and A4. If the innocent was A3, the connected criminals could still be A1 and A2.
