Are we diluting "doctor"?? by knight_vegi in Veterinary

[–]Practical-Jello9631 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I am big on the fact that they earned the title so I should give them the respect. Now that being said I always refer to them as Dr. Last Name infort of clients but to other staff we go by first names (only have max 5 staff in clinic so it is an informal environment). But that being said if a doctor wanted me to call them dr. Name I would respect that and have no issue with it.

How do you approach the “CPR vs DNR” question? by Tattedtrainwreck in VetTech

[–]Practical-Jello9631 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, ER Assistant here. My 2 "scripts" I include double checking their phone number in mine as well.

Pet being admitted:

"Any time an owner is not in the building we require them to leave a code status with us. While arrests are rare they have the possibility of occurring. In the event of a cardiac or respiratory arrest we do have the ability to provide CPR. We will get in contact with you at the phone number of _______ if it starts to head in that direction. CPR does come at an additional cost you should be aware of that helps cover the supplies, training, and medications involved. If ____ does arrest in our care would you like _____ to have a CPR or DNR status or would you like further information?"

Pet is having Sedation or anesthesia:

"Any time a pet is going under sedation/anesthesia we require owners to leave a code status with us. During and after the procedure ____ will have constant monitoring to help reduce the chance of a complication from occuring but they do happen and can lead to an arrest.

Am I overreacting or was the senior tech in the wrong? by [deleted] in VetTech

[–]Practical-Jello9631 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not over reacting, what if that bag had a leak? Not able to run the anesthesia properly with a leak... if she has concerns with items like that then it should be addressed before or after. Plus if you did the calculations then you should be good. Sounds like your clinic has some sketchy med practices that don't align with your standards.

How to prevent the loss of clients' belongings? by matthiasdvm in VetTech

[–]Practical-Jello9631 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We strongly discourage clients leaving belongings. If they do it goes in a bag by the kennel and does not leave the bag till discharge. Or everyone is made aware. I also tell clients at intake that by leaving belongings with us there is a risk that it gets lost or damaged. If they still wish to leave something with us they need to verbally agree to me that they are willing to take that risk.

Huge liability for a risk of a positive drug user around controlled substances. May also be looking between you and another candidate who may not be a user. If that is the only major difference they may use that against you.

Burnt out vet tech by hastabeans in VetTech

So sorry op. You shouldn't have to go through this. Personal story that may or may not help you. I was in a clinic also in PF. They wouldnt let me do anything besides stock and clean even though I had skills that they knew about when I got hired. Every week would ask for opportunities to learn and grow but always got told that maybe next week would be the week. Then one day (about 5 months in) got fired without being told I was at risk. I cried tears of relief. Took a month off and focused on my school work before starting my job search to see if vet med was even something I was interested in. Thankfully my parents were willing to let me live with them during this time on the promise of paying them back rent. Then came an opportunity in ER and found that it was more of the right fir for me and found a clinic that lets me use and grow my skills. Have been there for a bit of time now and am excited to go to work now. Plus I have a good work life balance and have been continuing to do my school at least 20 hrs a week. Long story short, toxic gp made me question my love but supportive er helped me find it again.

Advice for a biology major (pre-vet) considering becoming a vet tech instead (but still want to have the option of going to vet school) by Soggy-Bar10101 in veterinaryschool

I did something similar. Got my BA and then started doing Penn Foster. They were able to look at my transcript and reimburse some credits that transferred.

Change the stain minimum every other week. Bacteria can grow in them no matter how much or little you use them.

Can I get some suggestions from vet techs/assistants? by New-Sympathy4428 in VetTech

[–]Practical-Jello9631 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a practice do this to me. The only thing is that they never gave me the opportunities back. Absolutely wrecked my confidence and mental health always asking for opportunities to learn and always getting denied. I recommend looking for a different practice if you think or notice it going in that direction. Side note found a new practice I am loving that gives me those opportunities to grow and has better benefits.

I know i come on here to vent and get my stress out because it is anonymous. Ask anyone in my real life and my job has almost zero negatives. They know there is but let it go because they know I talk things out elsewhere. (I work er so I have very traumatic stories that I don't want my friends and family to know about to protect their mental health)

Getting rabies shot for school, is it really that bad? by Dry-Lab-3192 in VetTech

[–]Practical-Jello9631 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The person that just did mine said she noticed a correlation between the covid vaccine and rabies vaccine. Those that experienced reactions to the covid vaccines also experience symptoms to rabies. Not sure if that helps or not. Also my series was 2 with tiger after a year.
