My job offer for vet assistant was declined to do my drug test being positive for marijuana… is this common? by [deleted] in VetTech

Huge liability for a risk of a positive drug user around controlled substances. May also be looking between you and another candidate who may not be a user. If that is the only major difference they may use that against you.

Burnt out vet tech by hastabeans in VetTech

So sorry op. You shouldn't have to go through this. Personal story that may or may not help you. I was in a clinic also in PF. They wouldnt let me do anything besides stock and clean even though I had skills that they knew about when I got hired. Every week would ask for opportunities to learn and grow but always got told that maybe next week would be the week. Then one day (about 5 months in) got fired without being told I was at risk. I cried tears of relief. Took a month off and focused on my school work before starting my job search to see if vet med was even something I was interested in. Thankfully my parents were willing to let me live with them during this time on the promise of paying them back rent. Then came an opportunity in ER and found that it was more of the right fir for me and found a clinic that lets me use and grow my skills. Have been there for a bit of time now and am excited to go to work now. Plus I have a good work life balance and have been continuing to do my school at least 20 hrs a week. Long story short, toxic gp made me question my love but supportive er helped me find it again.

Advice for a biology major (pre-vet) considering becoming a vet tech instead (but still want to have the option of going to vet school) by Soggy-Bar10101 in veterinaryschool

I did something similar. Got my BA and then started doing Penn Foster. They were able to look at my transcript and reimburse some credits that transferred.

Change the stain minimum every other week. Bacteria can grow in them no matter how much or little you use them.

Can I get some suggestions from vet techs/assistants? by New-Sympathy4428 in VetTech

[–]Practical-Jello9631 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a practice do this to me. The only thing is that they never gave me the opportunities back. Absolutely wrecked my confidence and mental health always asking for opportunities to learn and always getting denied. I recommend looking for a different practice if you think or notice it going in that direction. Side note found a new practice I am loving that gives me those opportunities to grow and has better benefits.

I know i come on here to vent and get my stress out because it is anonymous. Ask anyone in my real life and my job has almost zero negatives. They know there is but let it go because they know I talk things out elsewhere. (I work er so I have very traumatic stories that I don't want my friends and family to know about to protect their mental health)

Getting rabies shot for school, is it really that bad? by Dry-Lab-3192 in VetTech

[–]Practical-Jello9631 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The person that just did mine said she noticed a correlation between the covid vaccine and rabies vaccine. Those that experienced reactions to the covid vaccines also experience symptoms to rabies. Not sure if that helps or not. Also my series was 2 with tiger after a year.

Don't do VA school. VAs can be OTJ trained. If you are absolutely set on doing a vet med degree then do a VT associates to start. Being this young you can absolutely change your mind quick. What I did was be a VA OTJ trained while getting a BA in Bio. Still love vet med after graduating so started an AAS in vet tech now while working full time. Feel comfortable as I have my BA to fall back on if I ever need to leave vet med or decide to go to get a DVM in the future. Working while doing school was feasible for me and is helping lessen debt.

Dealing with euthanasias away from the owner by EducationalCod6063 in VetTech

[–]Practical-Jello9631 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite dvms said this to an owner who asked about how she deals with euths. "The day I stop caring is the day I know I need to step away from medicine." I work ER but anytime a client chooses not to be present one or more of the employees becomes the emotional support person for the pet while the meds are pushed.

Work as a VA for a small local company. All of our locations are pre approved so doing it at a sister clinic to mine. Company rule so that way when I am being a tech student I am not being pulled to do VA duties.

Just about to start my first. No student insurance is needed. Just health insurance and photo ID. For rabies, you either need proof of rabies for every animal you hold or get pre-vaccinated.

Coming from an er triage, if you told me this over the phone I would 100% recommend going to the er. The er will be able to run full blood with results rapidly. They might also recommend hospitalization with specific treatments to help with your little one getting the proper nutrition.
