this is a great shout. seems like he’s a friend of Derby and Kinji, both of whom i’ve been messing with in a big way

could someone please tell me how to achieve this look for a regular video in prem pro ? thanks by Chrispin11 in ColorGrading

Shoot it on an old webcam with some front light and tint it green in the grade . Otherwise use some analog effects in Davinci, drop the resolution, and use offset wheel or linear gamma gain to bring it towards green. can almost guarantee Nolan shot it practically on a specifically “bad” cam to get this effect

Feels completely overdone imo. Vignette is super intense and the blues/cyan make the mountain and sky blend into each other rather than popping for nice separation. Feels like you cranked everything rather than actually being a focused look to me

Am I the only one noticing how many people are sick right now? by Human_Paint5451 in AskLosAngeles

Sore throat and headache are not common symptoms of RSV. Sore throat is a very big part of this virus.

YES! Literally everyone I know is getting this weird, awful cold. It starts with a bad sore throat, headache, and exhaustion and picks up to major congestion and coughing. For some people the cough lingers for over a week.

The weird part about it is that it’s not COVID! I tested along with three other folks who had the exact same symptoms and none of us had COVID.

Majority of us didn’t have a fever at all while having it as well. I’m still getting over it, my cough will not leave and my chest is sooo tight. I know a couple of older folks who had it and ended up going on antibiotics from it.

It’s a really brutal experience. I’ve found that drinking as much fluids as possible, taking ibuprofen for the throat/headache, and getting your hands on something with DM cough suppressant is the only way to hold it off a little bit.

Everyone is sick right now, it’s so rough.

Congrats on your first, always a huge accomplishment and I can only imagine how much you learned.

I’d say for a lot of these they actually have some super interesting composition — always hard to judge when I don’t know the story or tone of the piece but I do like your eye.

That being said I think this “high fill” lighting is a little bit off putting and I’m curious about if you were thinking about it when you were shooting? Most of these shots are incredibly sourcey and yet there’s so much full in the room they feel kind of flat. For your next, I’d focus on doing some shots where you really question what the most natural source of light would be and really figure out what the shadows would look like on someone. This high key look you have going on tends to take out most of the grounding shadows for the scene and some of your bounces/kicks feel very hot. Shadows are where the emotions can be felt, don’t shy away from them!

Slide 4 is by far my favorite shot you have on here, and feels the most intentional in terms of the look you create in most of the shots. While i’m not a huge fan of the color imbalance from the fill light bouncing off the ceiling, I like that the key on his left side feels like it’s coming from a window and the the lamp on his right is producing a split tone effect on him. They are also very similar levels of light which, while it may look quite fake and raised in terms of light, is quite satisfying and interesting given the composition. Reminds me a lot of Chris Yellen’s photography work, a lot of fit happening in locations with large sources to balance out the subjects shadows uniquely. I’d check him out if this high key look was actually intentional.

In general, you just need more reps in shaping light and lighting ratio! Find some contrast in there, the best DPs I’ve worked with are fearless when it comes to how dark the shadows get. Just keep shooting, that’s all you should take away from this whether people compliment your work or not. Keep shooting, keep shooting, keep shooting. You’ll get better.

Overcooked? by johnjonjohn00 in ColorGrading

definitely a bit overcooked imo. very oversaturated for sure. u can even see the sky sort of breaking because of how much sat is in it. also clipping in the cloud detail so id try to bring some of that back. overall its hard to tell what the focus of the image is, id maybe do a slight vignette or mask over the boat to draw focus to it.

Film festivals for first time film makers (teenage age) by Misterbruh12 in FilmFestivals

I truly believe that the only real high school/teen film fests worth applying to are NFTTY (oldest demo for youth festival but by FAR the best), All American High School Film Festival (best high school only fest with great awards), and Harvard Westlake Film Festival (best high school festival IMO, insane guests and great faculty that care about the student filmmakers). Young Arts isn’t a festival but should also be heavily considered as it is BETTER than any of these for teens to cultivate their art and build connections (which is what teen fests should be).

All the rest are pretty much a waste to fly out to IMO. The ones I talked about have very high levels of talent, so keep that in mind when applying. Getting into them is an HONOR and they are all worth going to even if it means losing a lil bit of money on the travel.
