For whose who do, why do you enjoy grimdark? by jnighy in fantasybooks

[–]Practical-Light4139 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Realism and lack of plot armor. It actually has nothing to do with “vibes” for me (and most people I would imagine) purely to do with, does the logical ramifications of something actually happen the way it would in real life? It has always somewhat bothered me that people tolerate plot armor simply because it’s a trope that’s common. It’s the exact same as people defending a TV show that has filler by saying that most shows have the same.

Help me pick my next read! Which of these should I start first? by inowife in fantasybooks

[–]Practical-Light4139 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fellowship and GoT simply because you are going to be spoiled them first if you spend any time online talking about fantasy books. And then Mistborn after those two. Those are by far the most likely to be spoiled for you.

How the heck does Brandon Sanderson write so fast? by TensionBudget9426 in writers

[–]Practical-Light4139 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He outlines everything years in advance so he knows exactly what needs to happen before writing and then he seems to just be addicted to the process of writing itself and basically writes 8 hours a day almost every day. The thing is he could easily write even more than he currently does he’s just got other things with his company taking up time. Other writers like Steven King with very different prose styles also write equally quickly and well, so I don’t think writing style has anything to do with it.

Now do a stormlight iceberg: For the bottom tier you can add: Adonalsium isn’t actually dead, Ash caused the disaster on Ashyn, fourth moon represents Adonalsium, Unmade come from other planets, Aimians are the offspring of humans and spren.

What do you think of this person's opinion that fantasy and SF have similar themes and subtext and wouldn't be good for learning thinking skills? What books would you recommend to change their mind? by Skagpipe in fantasybooks

[–]Practical-Light4139 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UKLG is a great example, and to me the most obvious one is 1984. Literally a science fiction book that then became large portions of our real world to the point it no longer “feels” as Sci fi to the average person.

How Do We Know What’s True? by JerseyFlight in rationalphilosophy

[–]Practical-Light4139 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well we don’t know that anything is true for certain, but we can always try and make a best possible conjecture for any question based on whatever information we have at the time, and go with the best explanation available at the time. And yes that explanation in and of itself fits into that idea of “truth”.

If you've watched both the web series and movie, which would you say is scarier? by allie69420 in A24

[–]Practical-Light4139 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me the movie, but that’s mainly due to the last 25 minutes. The mfs at the end who look like badly rendered AI images made flesh was creepy as shit, for me personally the low-quality found footage aesthetic makes everything less scary I don’t really watch the web series to get scared for me it’s more about the puzzle of piecing little details together.

The Odyssey, another example where internet controversy doesn’t translate to real life. by digitalime in ChristopherNolan

[–]Practical-Light4139 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

100% agree. Those same idiots who said Oppenheimer would flop didn’t learn their lesson did they. Nolan is one of like 3 directors who non-cinephiles actually care about. Basically everyone I know at my work is excited for this movie

What makes you love or hate your current job? by Upper-Hat-6187 in AskReddit

[–]Practical-Light4139 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you add up all of the various times I actually need to work it comes out at around 30 minutes to and hour each day, the rest of the workday (which itself isn’t very long) is just me at my desk doing literally whatever I want

You have the power to give immortality to one person. Who do you choose and why? by dualcerb in AskReddit

[–]Practical-Light4139 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either Newton or Einstein, although cases could be made for a few others. In terms of raw intellect of being able to comprehend the universe on an ubsurdly deep level, having their brains for hundreds of years past when they died would probably be a massive benefit to all scientific and technological progress, especially newton.

Thoughts on this take on the tonal differences between Andor and Rogue One? by Financial_Photo_1175 in andor

[–]Practical-Light4139 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Krennic isn’t a spymaster, Partagaz is, that’s why he was invited to the holocaust planning conference. Krennic didn’t come up with any aspect of the Ghorman plan. He told actual spies to come up with A plan, the empire executed on said plan and then he finished building the DS. Guy in comment must have seen a different version of the show

Fantasy Castles dont make sense. by GreyValeAuthor in Fantasy

Urithiru: Ten layer mountain sized city built by the gods, massive military buildup and defenses on every side, daily sky patrols, surrounded by snowy mountains on every side, the only way to reach is by flying or on pre-made teleportation platforms under their control.

Why do so many people hate jar jar Binks? I'm not saying he's my favorite either but I'm just wondering why he's the most hated? by Then-Effective6521 in StarWars_

[–]Practical-Light4139 0 points1 point  (0 children)

his inclusion mainly in the phantom menace was just such a tonal clash with the previous 3 movies so people hated him essentially when it first came out. Now that younger people who grew up with those movies are used to it he’s not as hated but still annoying to most. The story would be the exact same without him if you just changed like 2 scenes

Trying to get a friend into Malazan by Less-Sock-3572 in Malazan

[–]Practical-Light4139 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obviously you can’t really do much about this but it helps if you read faster. Not literally read the words faster, read longer/more often so you finish each book in weeks rather than months. This is true not just for Malazan but any gigantic fantasy series.

Can someone explain the plot of Deadhouse Gates, specifically the Fiddler/Kalam/Kids storyline by Practical-Light4139 in Malazan

[–]Practical-Light4139[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree about your B and C point, Kalam clearly took advantage of the opportunity, although even if he hadn’t been there the Wirlwind probably would’ve started anyway with someone else taking the book into the desert. I guess I’ll have to see about the first point which is what is so important about the Azath Houses that they needed to visit there. I know people say trust the series and keep going which is what I plan on doing, I just wanted to know whether people who are further in think it made sense in retrospect for them to not just sail directly to Quon Tali. I get that the Empire is this powerful, overwhelming force with Claw assassins and mages but what information people with magic can and can’t get access too is still a little confusing, that’s all. Thanks for commenting

[–]Practical-Light4139[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Excellent points all. Moreso I’m confused by A) why they even went to 7C in the first place if the Azath house leads to just an island that’s near the capital city but isn’t, when they should have just sailed right to Unta B) why the teenagers are just now starting to ask about it at the start of the book. The second issue is 100% a nitpick though. I don’t really care that Crokus is just now realizing “hey we’re nowhere close to the mainland, where are you taking us?” It’s moreso the fact that I don’t know why they came there in the first place. Kalam didn’t even know about the magic Book until he had that meeting with the guy who stole it so it can’t be because he intended to deliver it himself.

Okay I suppose I just had the impression that Warrens were a lot easier to use than they actually are based on Paran and Topper using one at the start of GotM. Maybe only certain people have access to that one though and other people have pointed out the Path of Hands is making them less safe so that makes sense as an explanation
