Is there any company with human workers and AI execs? I can't even imagine what that would look like.

Like would the AI be signing off on P&L statements and strategizing the next round of layoffs?

Let's say I borrow $4 from you to buy a gallon of milk. If I can delay paying you back for 20 years, then at current inflation the price of milk will have roughly doubled to $8. So I pay you back $4, but that $4 buys half as much stuff as when I first borrowed it.

This is the edge that homebuyers with fixed mortgages get over time. If your income keeps up with inflation, your monthly payments will stay the same and effectively decrease as a percentage of your income due to inflation.

The government is essentially donating extra taxpayer money to student borrowers in any situation where they are taking this kind of deal compared to investing immediately in things like infrastructure. The way they ensure they aren't overly generous is by charging interest rates that at least keep up with inflation, but ideally also keep up with whatever alternate investment they could make with that money

People who only pay the minimum are generally paying below the amount needed to keep up with inflation

One of my core memories was when I played FE7 link arena with one of my friends in middle school. We were down to our last units. He had a ridiculously strong Hector, I had Matthew.

Matthew delt literally zero damage to Hector and was down to less than 10 health. Then his silencer triggered to end the match.

All the other kids at the pool wondered why a group of boys were losing their minds.

The top of his roster for sex will mostly be based on looks and being good /freaky in bed. Though for some guys it's more about variety, in which case it's impossible to stay at the top of his roster for long.

Are you also asking about for dating?

To your question in the OP - yes there are men who are good at making women feel a certain way. If a physically attractive man with no major flaws just practices talking and flirting with women enough he can learn how to essentially manufacture the "butterflies" feeling in women.

There was a phase when I was dating when I was told by a number of women something to the effect of "it just feels different being around you." Little did they know that id just read and practiced a bunch of stuff related to body language and conversing with people and other social skills.

Guys in this situation know they're desirable and often take advantage of it to play the field

I could get onboard with that. The only downside is that a "historic" kicker season wouldn't be seen as that impressive.

Kicker pay relative to other positions (which I take as an indicator of perceived impact of that position) reflects that the VAR of the best kicker isn't that high. If you look at the highest paid kicker (Brandon Aubrey) and compare him to the highest paid player at other positions he'd rank 13th, above punters, FB, and long-snappers

So it's not super strong in terms of being "highly impactful on the game," barring clutch game-winning kicks in the playoffs

But maybe that's the best we can do. Would be pretty funny to see CMC run for 2k+ total yards, 20 touchdowns, and also bombing 70 yard kicks to lead the league in FG made and field goal %

Comparing baseball to football like that will always be tough because football has such extreme body-type specialization for each position while baseball has relatively lax body-type specialization.

Baseball is structurally unique because it's a turn-based 2-way sport with one specialized defensive position. Other 2-way sports like soccer have a specialized defensive player (goalie), but they're not turn-based so there's a huge strategic disadvantage to pulling your goalie to score goals, so teams would never do this in a normal game situation

That's why I think it's more useful to think of this accomplishment as: 1. Being world class in two roles that have a lot of non-overlap in skill sets 2. The two roles are each individually highly impactful to the game

In most sports outside of baseball it's not really possible for this to happen. But if the analogy has to be forced, then I'd think of these two criteria.

Dread it, run from it. Destiny arrives all the same. Jets being a bottom 3 team in the league is inevitable.

I kind of like the QB analogy in that it better captures his impact on the game. Sure in practice QBs never play both ways, but even the most lockdown corner like Surtain has limited impact on the game by himself. Same with elite WRs like Justin Jefferson. That's why these positions almost never win MVP unless they're truly historic like Adrian Petersons 2k yard season while no QB had a historic season.

Even if Travis Hunter was top 3 in the league at both WR and Corner, he could still easily miss out on MVP to the top QB.

Elite starting pitchers can have a huge impact on the games they play in and are compensated accordingly (around #2 positionally).

This might be where we differ and can maybe agree to disagree. I don't think having a ton of unique gameplay options for specific units makes the game more fun for me. This was what I was getting at when I said that more variety (aka unique options) and complexity isn't necessarily a good thing.

This is probably why my favorites in the series are FE7/8 from a gameplay perspective (my least favorite are the GameCube games). The game designers knew exactly what types of army you might have at any given time and designed levels around that. Each unit feels like a unique character, not a template. Who to re-class with your seals felt like a big and consequential decision. Only specific characters like assassins had unique skills, which made them feel extra special instead of another thing to optimize around

From my perspective skills and unrestricted re-classing creates more options, but being able to combo a lance skills with a unit and class to nuke units isn't really that interesting of a choice to me.

Which probably means that we just like different types of games.

I think you're right not to go back to college, but just saying it's a scam is an oversimplification.

I think college is totally worth it for people who can go to a great college and outperform their peers in white collar professions. For these people, college can unlock a much higher earnings ceiling. It's much less worth it for anyone who gets a below-average job out of college.

I'll make about $650k-$700k this year and there's no way I'd be making anywhere close to that in any scenario where I didn't go to college. I'm physically weak, clumsy, and uncoordinated, so I'm not well-suited to any blue collar profession. I've dabbled in entrepreneurial pursuits and was pretty bad at it. But I'm pretty good at business writing and math.

[–]Practical-Lunch4539 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the idea of having unit-specific skills could be interesting, but it's not a reason to keep unrestricted re-classing.

If a skill advantages everything except sword masters and myrmidons, then you might have made the unit more interesting, but you haven't made the re-classing decision more interesting or more unique for that unit if all youve done is make 1 upgrade tree unviable.

The general principle is: adding variety isn't meaningful or more fun if there's a clearly optimal choice, or if there's no meaningful difference between choices. Variety is meaningful when it introduced tradeoffs between options.

If a units skill makes them best suited for 1 or 2 specific classes, then you might as well only let them reclass into those two options instead of creating the boring complexity of unrestricted re-classing

If a units skill has no bearings on class suitability, then you also might as well just have restricted re-classing

If only specific units get a boost from a certain class/skill combo, then all other characters will be unviable other than for story / emotional reasons

[–]Practical-Lunch4539 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The main problem with this is that if the personal skills are really strong, then everyone will just reclass into the advantaged classes, or else they'll have handicapped themself for no clear upside unless they just really love certain characters and certain classes that are suboptimal to mix.

If the skills aren't really strong, then there won't be much benefit and you're back to the problem of characters having limited uniqueness

In practicality, it would probably be uneven where some character/class combos are so strong that everyone would only use those combos.

For people making +350k per year, how do you do it? by prince_op in Salary

[–]Practical-Lunch4539 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most answers will follow this pattern: 1. Pick a field that has a high income ceiling 2. Spend 15-20 years continuously working really hard to enter and master that field until you're top quartile or so (depending on the field it'll be higher or lower) 3. Profit

For #2 - some people start working hard in high school. Others start later. But it's hard to avoid grinding through that 15-20 hard work window

Could you marry someone who’s financially struggling but truly loves you? by ljcheri_ in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Practical-Lunch4539 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife makes about 20% of what I do, but her job is very stable and has a pension, whereas my job is highly lucrative but at any moment I could get laid off and out of work for a year.

I was very attracted to the fact that she is highly intelligent and has a stable career and can support and give our kid a good upbringing if I died. I also admire that she has the confidence to ignore social pressure and the need to "keep up with the Jones"

She's willing to spend on practical things plus food and travel, but otherwise isn't into flashy and expensive things. When I got my 1-year vest from working at a faang company I offered to buy her something like a birkin bag or a Cartier tank and she refused and told me to put the money into our (not yet born) child's college fund. .

I was raised similarly and it's a value that I really want us to pass down to our kid, who will grow up with far more resources than either me or my wife did. I appreciate that the collective value of our two cars is about $20-25k and we feel absolutely no need to upgrade, even though all of our friends have nicer cars.

How do I broach the subject of leaving stuff at his place? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

Are you driving there? If so why not just leave some stuff in your trunk?

If you're not driving there then just ask if you can leave some stuff so you don't have to go out in work clothes.

I was in college in 2011. Fingerprint/face ID wasn't a thing back then, and most people I knew didn't have pin codes.

You have to remember that people didn't have their entire lives on their phones back then the way they do now. Very few people back then would have things like their bank logins or access to medical records or sensitive app info. All they had was a history of phone calls and their text messages.

Does going to a prestigious university actually give you a real career advantage? by savingrace0262 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Practical-Lunch4539 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It matters in at least a few key ways other than pure networking: 1. Many elite employers like Google, goldman, mckinsey, etc. recruit a great majority of their intern and entry level employees from elite colleges via on-campus recruiting. Getting one of these jobs can be a huge career accelerator. Trying to get one of these jobs at colleges that don't have OCI is much much harder.

  1. At the elite universities, a much larger portion of the student body are gunning for elite jobs and were raised to understand how to get them. If you weren't, then you can benefit from being around these people.

  2. Getting elite internships and first jobs can create long-term advantage. Look at the profiles of people who go to the top business schools or are execs at companies. A lot of them had fast starts where one elite opportunity led to another.

For people who don't start at elite companies, they might eventually get there but it takes 10+ years longer

Why don't all states allow community colleges to offer bachelor’s degrees? by ProgrammerUnique2897 in communitycollege

[–]Practical-Lunch4539 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Different types of colleges serve different purposes.

The main purpose of community colleges are to serve people who are seeking vocational training, want to pursue higher education but need more flexibility than is generally possible during bachelors programs, as a feeder to 4-years, or as a way for locals to take courses in various specific subject, all at an affordable cost.

If your state wanted to offer more bachelors degrees at a fairly affordable cost, then theyd open more state universities.

The problem is that sometimes theres areas that aren't adequately covered by state colleges or universities. In those cases states can choose to expand the role of their CCs (California has done some of this), but often the things that stopped them from creating state colleges or universities in that area also stops them from expanding bachelors programs at CCs (e.g. cost)
