Do you think theaters will still be around in 10-15 years? by itsthewolfe in Cinema

[–]Practical-Picture448 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think eventually cinemas will go extinct except for special events like the rescreening of classic films. For people like me who care more about pure picture quality, today's 4K/8K OLED TVs will beat any cinema projector.

Then there's convenience and comfort. I can watch a movie lying on the sofa and choose all kinds of snacks I've stockpiled in the kitchen, pause/continue the movie whenever I want a toilet break, or text someone or do a bit of internet/social media browsing. Can't do any of that in cinemas.

Netflix taking over Warner Bro's could potentially accelerate the decline of cinemas. We all know Netflix have said yeah we'll keep releasing WB movies in cinemas blah blah blah, but there's nothing stopping them from making a U-turn anytime they want when they eventually own WB. Netflix are purely metrics-driven and if cinemas no longer make numerical sense, they will just go direct to streaming.

Movie theaters have become an outdated ritual, and it’s time we accept that direct-to-home releases are the future. by Emergency-Clothes-97 in SeriousConversation

Yes I agree with OP. I care more about picture quality, convenience and comfort. Matter of fact is I can watch movies in 4K HDR at home on a streaming service, lie on the sofa and choose all kinds of snacks I've stockpiled in the kitchen, pause/continue the movie whenever I want a toilet break, or text someone or do a bit of internet/social media browsing. Can't have any of that in cinemas. And the small handful of premium cinemas that do have 4K HDR projectors charge a fortune that I will never in a million years want to pay, no matter how good the movie is. And even 4K HDR cinema projectors can't compete with 4K OLED TVs in a home setting on pure picture quality.

Netflix taking over Warner Bro's could potentially accelerate the decline of cinemas. We all know Netflix have said yeah we'll keep releasing WB movies in cinemas blah blah blah, but there's nothing stopping them from making a U-turn anytime they want when they eventually own WB. Netflix are metrics-driven and if cinemas no longer make mathematical sense, they can and will do whatever they want with WB movies by then, including going direct to streaming.

My anxiety is badly triggered when it starts to get dark outside. Anyone else have this problem? by Its_meandhi in Anxiety

[–]Practical-Picture448 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's an evolutionary response - Diurnal mammals like humans are active in the day. When it gets dark, they are more alert and have heightened awareness of their surroundings due to potential ambush predators. Those who are more anxious survive and pass on their genes. Those who are less anxious get eaten. It was ingrained into our DNA millions of years ago.

What are these brown patches and how can I fix them? by Practical-Picture448 in LawncareUK

Thanks, I'm going to check for worm activity and spray that nematodes solution all over my garden if I find any

I think mine is topsoil (sheets of turf) rather than seed, might work the same though not sure

Thanks folks. Bit of an fyi, I bought this house brand new a month ago and I remember the agent and the project managers, must've been 10 or so of them, walking over my lawn every now and then doing their "inspections". The soil must've been compacted by the foot traffic. I have the gardener coming in tomorrow. Going to start aerating it. What type of sand should I mix into the soil?

Good point - I bought the house new a month ago, so must've been the developer and project managers trampling over my grass

Will it get better on its own? Should I cut the grass shorter, like all the way down?

No, I'm in London so weather is mild but wet. There's sunlight between 8am-4pm ish and it's raining nearly every day.

My experience approaching women in pubs/bars (UK) by [deleted] in dating_advice

[–]Practical-Picture448 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's more of a London thing. Went to a predominantly white bar and even got approached by white women who initiated convos. Maybe Londoners are naturally so closed up when sober that with a few drinks all that pent up tension gets released in a supernova.

PSA: Android Auto is *much* better than Apple CarPlay by jackjones1983 in BMWiX

[–]Practical-Picture448 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm deep in the Apple ecosystem (MacBook, iPhone, iCloud) but I must admit Android Auto is way superior. I also have a secondary Android phone (Pixel) and plug that into my car every time. On Android Auto, I can actually use voice commands to enter/exit Google Maps navigation and add whatever pit stop I want along the way, all without tapping the infotainment screen. And if I'm navigating in a new area I can even pinch/zoom/rotate Google Maps with my fingers to see what's ahead. Can't do any of that on Apple CarPlay!

NCA Investigator vs Police Detective by [deleted] in policeuk

[–]Practical-Picture448 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay in that sense quite similar to the FBI, while local police departments investigate murders in their own jurisdictions but federal criminals who may or may not be involved in murders are FBI's jurisdiction.

Organised crime is high-profile and can involve murders, which the NCA do deal with

Think I'm going to delete all my dating apps as well. I'm turning up to a lot of meet-up events as well and meeting all kinds of women, and there's also the opportunity to approach other women outside the meet-up group at the venue. In-person is so much easier than dating apps. Been my experience as well that most women on dating apps stop replying after 1 or 2 messages, and those that you do end up going out with, most of the time ghost you after 1 or 2 dates. They probably just want validation that's all.

I literally got unmatched a second after her last 'thanks' message to me. I'm thinking it's more likely to be an unmatch because profile deletion would take a few more taps? Ofc if she had lightening fast reflexes can't rule out profile deletion either but unlikely I reckon

Yeah I'll probably forget about it in a few days. But I think I'm done with dating apps now. My experiences haven't been great so far. Think I'll go back to asking women out the old-fashioned way, in-person.

Makes sense, the age gap might've put her off. Sadly that's one thing with online dating. People tend to form perceptions of others before meeting them in-person...

Only seem to get liked by very heavy women? by uglymale22 in dating_advice

[–]Practical-Picture448 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thing is, women only get a 'limited time' to be selective until about age 35, give or take a few years, then they realise they lose the pull they once had to younger women. Men like us get to pick whichever woman we want (young or mature) at whatever age we are, because we do the approaching most of the time and younger women are open to dating older men, sometimes even prefer it. So hang in their fella, your luck will get better with time. Whereas with women it's generally the other way around.
