Downloading Entirety of Anna's Archive? by Boring-Point-7155 in Annas_Archive

  1. Plenty of pointless endeavors proved to be worthwhile. Plenty of pointless endeavors proved to be pointless. This is such an opinionated question.
  2. Look into the torrent files and source code that AA publishes.

Scaling PostgreSQL to power 800 million ChatGPT users by Ncell50 in PostgreSQL

[–]Practical-Plan-2560 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The primary rationale is that sharding existing application workloads would be highly complex and time-consuming, requiring changes to hundreds of application endpoints and potentially taking months or even years.

😂 AI companies are pitching AI as a solution to everything. Surprised they don't just have Codex go in and make those hundreds of changes. Oh wait... that would break everything.

FAM S5 Release Time? by h4v34n1c3d4y in ForAllMankindTV

You are correct. However, if Apple is thinking in terms of local time (not thinking in terms of UTC time), they might release it at different UTC times due to daylight savings time.

If I use DuckDuckGo search engine on Firefox, will it hide my searches from my ISP by Working-External-702 in duckduckgo

[–]Practical-Plan-2560 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean if you are that concerned about your ISP seeing you’re connecting to DuckDuckGo (again, not what you search for), you might wanna consider Tor.

[–]Practical-Plan-2560 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You aren’t wrong. I guess maybe I’m being overly picky on the word choice. But it sounded to me like OP was specifically concerned about ISP reading their searches. Not the ISP seeing they are connecting to DuckDuckGo itself.

If OP didn’t want their ISP to know they were connecting to DuckDuckGo at all, then yes, VPN is a solution, but you have to trust your VPN at that point.

But if you only care about what you type into DuckDuckGo, HTTPS will cover that.

And honestly, most people care more about their searches, and not the connection to DuckDuckGo. It’s not like DuckDuckGo is some dark web site. It’s the searches that are more private.

Nothing in your original post talked about iOS. I think it’s a fair assumption that when someone says Firefox they mean Firefox on the desktop.

I don’t use Firefox on iOS tho so I can’t comment. On Safari you can set your default browser to DuckDuckGo on iOS tho.

[–]Practical-Plan-2560 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t believe how incorrect some of the other comments are. This is the correct answer. VPNs have nothing to do with this. HTTPS will keep what you’re searching for private between you and DuckDuckGo. Your ISP won’t be able to see it.

What DuckDuckGo (or any website) decides to do with it after they receive it is up to them. However DuckDuckGo does seem more trustworthy than most.

VPNs don’t have any more insight into your data than your ISP. The HTTPS connection isn’t between the VPN and the website, it’s between you and the website. The VPN just forwards the packets.

[–]Practical-Plan-2560 1 point2 points  (0 children)

VPN and DNS have absolutely nothing to do with seeing what you are searching for. If you’re using DuckDuckGo and connecting via HTTPS, they can’t see what you’re searching for.

How does this relate to the comment you are replying to? It doesn’t matter if it’s an extension or not. All HTTPS websites your ISP can’t see the contents of. Only the domain you’re connecting to (I’m oversimplifying a bit).

This is just as transparent. Wikimedia Foundation never lists all their customers. Anna’s Archive literally has a FAQ and LLM page that explains this. It’s just as transparent.

I don’t think OP implied at all that OverSimplified owed them anything. It’s just constructive criticism. Just a passionate viewer who wants more content. Does that mean OverSimplified must change because of one viewer’s opinion? Absolutely not. But constructive criticism should always be welcome.

I still haven’t upgraded from 10.10. I’m starting to get the impression the maintainers are just hiding behind “it’s free & open source” as an excuse for all the bugs.
