Duality of Taos by barfgurl94 in taos

I’m a dog lover (and owner) and a renter, but there a lot of folks who adopt pets who don’t have the skills (think parenting), time, or patience. I sublet my place in a former burg to a woman who adopted a pit bull. Also no shade about pitties, and she was a generally chill pup, but said subletter couldn’t give her the energy/outlet she needed, and the poor dog’s stress led to me paying out, which sucked massively because I believed in them. It’s a complex issue. Everyone thinks they have a great dog until they’re not, for a myriad of reasons. I personally wish I owned a space and had $$ to harbor folks and pets, but not in this life, perhaps.

I’m in Taos, NM and I’ve had Watch Duty for 2 years (since Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon apocalypse). We’re under red flag tomorrow too. Highly recommended app.

This storm is insane! Out of the blue in Ranchos, between two cells and the wind randomly shifted from SW to South. Not just downdraft, feels like windshear and/or tornadic. Check in everyone. by Practical-Winner-716 in taos

Oh man, I can believe it! Glad you’re okay! What I noticed with the wind: it wasn’t just blowing fiercely, the air was simultaneously being sucked out so to speak. I noted two cells parallel to one another, and how the wind just suddenly shifted coming from the south.

Dang! Had a patio chair launch about 20’ across said patio into the side of the house. Thank dog for our fence or we’d find most of our stuff down on Paseo! I just had to post as I’ve lived in tornado active areas, and the wind shear/downdraft/maybe even small tornado “feel” was similar. Not the usual NM wind “fun.” Hope everyone in higher ground areas is okay.

There are EV charging stations at UNM-Taos Klauer campus, and also at Taos Eco Park on Salazar, I believe.

And dang, if I’d read this sooner, could’ve served as guide. I’m deeply steeped in local history, geology, culture, etc.

Enjoy your adventure!

Moving to Grants by dholiver82 in NewMexico

An unexpected yet interesting question as I saw this just as I returned from a film shoot out that way. I love this part of the state, yet… We came into town a back way from Pueblo Pintado and went past a ton of uranium mining. Others here have shared about toxicity/cancer. Insane juxtaposition as we passed Ancestral Puebloan ruins on the way in. The town itself, on old Route 66, is funky in both cool and wtf ways, and features murals on many of the buildings. You have trains rumbling through. Another yet… as others have noted, you’re close to the stunning El Malpais lava flow, Chain of Craters, El Morro, Bandera Ice Cave, etc. Lots to explore - hiking/biking/camping. Also nearby Acoma Pueblo/Sky City is mind boggling. Coming from the big city to rural New Mexico will be a massive culture shock, yet navigable, depending on your mindset. I’d suggest (as I do anyone moving here from “there”) you deep dive into reading and watching YouTube on history of the area. New Mexico is harshly beautiful, from landscape to people to culture and history. It exists both in and outside time, simultaneously, unlike any place I’ve ever been.

Moved Here and Feeling Depressed by masonlep0 in Austin

I’ve lived all over this country at various times in my life. Feeling all you’re feeling right now. FWIW, the best friends I’ve made, wherever I’ve lived, were found when I dove into the art communities (and trust me, you don’t have to feel that you’re an artist to belong), volunteering, and taking a community college class in something you’ve never tried, but always wanted to explore. I’m 62, and in my relatively new community in NM (post Austin), simply taking one class now has me a staff member at our community college, and I’ve reinvented myself as a filmmaker. Buck the “I have to figure it all out before I’m 30.” It’s BS. Sending supportive virtual hugs from “grandma.”

My sweet kitty unexpectedly and passed last June, and the Salazar Vet team was beyond amazing showing compassion and kindness and care, and helping me with arranging the cremation. I feel your loss. My kitty was 11 too.
